Tsukishima is famous for its banonja, but did you know that there is a specialty store for cat goods?

It may not be famous for enthusiasts, but this shop is basically open only on Saturdays and Sundays, so many people don't know it yet?

Nishinaka Shopping Street is located in a narrow alley, and on weekends cat lovers gather regardless of men and women of all ages.

Tsukishima is famous for "Monja (Japanse soul food)", but did you know that there practically is a very special select shop for cat goods collectors? If you are a maniac, you might already be aware of, but since this shop only opens on Saturdays and Sundays, a lot of people might not know.

If you step into the cat shop, you will be absorbed in tasteful cat goods. Products are available in Japan and overseas.

Personally, I like the system, so my eyes stopped like this.

I have a weakness for lazy cats.

CIMG1489.JPG

Why only open on Saturdays and Sundays is that the owner, Onikubo's main job is a dentist, so he is busy with his main business on weekdays.

The reason why this shop only opens on weekends, is because Ms. Onikubo is busy during weekdays. She is a dentist by profession. CIMG1465.JPG

When you come to Tsukishima on weekends, if you like cats, why don't you stop by? It is also open during the grass market in July (9th and 10th in 2016).

If you have a time to visit Tsukishima on weekends and if you are a cat lover, why don't you stop over? The shop will be opened during Kusaichi festival (July 9-10, 2016), so come on over.

Ningyocho Kamei-do Traditional Japanese Bisquit, Ningyocho Kameido

[HK] May 5, 2016 14:00

I went to Ningyocho Kameido, a famous shop for tiled rice crackers.

It's on your right, tens of meters from the intersection of amazake Yokocho toward Hamacho Park.

One of the most famous and established Japanese confectionery is Kawarasenbei made and sold at Ningyocho Kameido. The head store is located along Amazake Yokocho Street.

CIMG1152.JPG thumbnail imageCIMG1167.JPG thumbnail image

In fact, tiled rice crackers weren't my favorite. However, the concept was overturned after receiving the tiled rice cracker of Ningyocho Kameido. What have you eaten so far? Why is it so different? When I suddenly hit the simple question with the president, Mr. Sasaki, he answered with a full smile.

"We are stubbornly obeying the manufacturing method that has been founded. No ingredients other than sugar, flour, eggs or honey are used. In addition, no preservatives will be used, and puppet ware in bags after 3 days will be removed from the store. " Protecting tradition and thorough quality control seemed to be the secret of deliciousness. It's like this to protect the curtains.

For long time, Kawarasenbei, which is the nomenclature of the traditional japanese bisquit, was not one of my favorite sweets, but after I have experienced Kameido's delicacy, my whole image of this bisquit have changed.  What have I been eating before? Why is this so good and special?

Mr. Kenji Sasaki, the president of the company gave me an answer distinctly and that is;

"We have not changed the recipe ever since company's foundation.  We only use sugar, flour, egg, and honey.  No preservative included and no display if the product (packed ningyoyaki) is over 3 days."

So, traditional recipe and strict quality control may be the key points.

CIMG1189.JPG

And the president told me the origin of Ningyocho Kamei-do.

In 1873, Kamei-do Sohonten, which was founded in Kobe Motomachi, was assigned to the first Ningyocho Sasaki family, an old house living in Tokyo since the early Edo period in 1929. The master of Kamei-do, Akiha Sasaki Genpatsu. It is the grandson of Sasaki Shoin who wrote the name of the bridge of the main pillar of Kyobashi.

In addition, Shinano Kamiakinobu, the father of Sasaki Branch, was the heavyweight of late Tokugawa shogunate and a large flagship book.

The first Kameido store, famous for its product Kawarasenbei, had started its business in Kobe in 1874.  In 1927, Mr. Sasaki's grandfather Genpatsu Sasaki was given privilege to use the name "Kameido" and start a business of his own in Tokyo after many years of training.

Genpatsu's grandfather was Shiin Sasaki who is famous for the calligraphy of the Kyobashi bridge pillar.

Genpatsu's great grandfather, Shinanonokami Akinobu who was great grandfather of Genpatsu was high ranked magistrate during Edo era.

Morning Daio Shinano Moriaki (Chosandaifushina no Kamiakinobu)

At the end of the Tokugawa period, he served as Edo Nambokucho magistrate and foreign magistrates, and his name magistrate can be known through rakugo "Sasaki Masadan".

In addition, the mission of the Imperial Court, which proclaims Shinano Mamoru from the Imperial Court, is listed at the head office.

It is the great-grandfather of Ningyocho Kameido's first store owner, Genpatsu.

Shinanonokami Akinobu

During Edo era, Akinobu was high ranked magistrate bugyo in charge of finance, law, and foreign affairs. His management competence is known through Rakuko (Japanese comic story), "Sasaki Seidan (political talk) ".  He was honored by Emperor as Shinannookami.  The written imperial order can be seen at Ningyocho Kamiedo.

Akinobu is the great grandfather of the founder of Ningyocho Kameido, Genpatsu Sasaki.

CIMG1187.JPG

Sasakishiin

He is the eldest son of Moriaki Shinano, a Chinese scholar and poet. The main pillar of the calligraphy "Kyobashi" still gives the personality of Ginza Chuo-dori as the "Kyobashi Monument" and is designated as the ward Tangible Cultural Property in Chuo-ku.

This is the grandfather of Kenpatsu.

Shiin Sasaki

The firstborn son of Akinobu who was scholar and poet. The name of the Kyobashi bridge engraved on the pillar of the bridge which is registered as tangible cultural asset of the city of Chuo-ku, had been written by Shiin.

Shiin is the grandfather of the founder of Ningyocho Kamiedo, Genpatsu Sasaki.

CIMG1208.JPG

Akira Sasaki (Sasaki)

The first owner of Ningyocho Kamei-do. A cheerful boy who went to service from an early age while being a samurai, ran through the turbulent era such as confusion after the shogunate's dissolution, the Great East Japan Earthquake of the Taisho era, and the Great War of Showa with his wisdom and genius. Recognized by the founder of the Kamei-do Sohonke in Kobe and the owner of Ueno Kamei-do, he is entrusted with one store. "~ Kamei-do Monogatari-Tokyo Shitamachi Story" is a record document written by Masaha Sasaki, the third son of Akira, from his father, and details the cityscape at that time and the historical facts from the latter half of the Meiji era to the high economic growth period of Showa. It is a book that can be enjoyed as a historical book.

Akira is the grandfather of the current president.

Genpatsu Sasaki

The founder of Ningyocho Kameido.  Though born in noble family, Genpatsu had to make a living after the great reform of the government.  He had gone through the confusion of Meiji era, survived the great earthquake of Taisho era, and lived through the World War of Showa era, and won his success with his wit and talent.  After years of training, he was given privilege to use the name "Kameido" and start his own business in Tokyo.   Genpatsu's biography "Kameido Story" written by his third son can also be enjoyed as a history book which also writes about the culture and historical events from Meiji to Showa.

Genpatsu is the grandfather of Mr. Kenji Sasaki, now president of the company.

CIMG1203.JPG

Ningyocho Kameido's tile crackers and Ningyo-yaki are made on the 3rd and 6th floors of the head office building, and you can always buy freshly made items. And the tile rice crackers are light, easy to carry, and can be stored at room temperature for 3 months, so they are useful as gifts regardless of the season. There is no need to worry about moisture because the tiled rice crackers are packaged in small pieces of 2-3 pieces. In addition, persimmon peanuts made from domestic peanuts born from the president's idea are very popular, and some customers buy them in bulk. Since it is not mass-produced to maintain quality, it is recommended that you go to buy it as soon as possible.

Kawarasenbei (japanese bisquit) and Ningyoyaki (sponge cake filled with red bean paste) are freshly made at the upper floor of the store. Kawarasenbei is made without any perservative, neverthelesss keeps at least for two months. It is wrapped in a small portion to avoid moist.  Since Kawarasenbei is so light to carry, many people buy them for souvenirs.

The current popular selling line is Kakipea (peanuts and spicy rice crackers mix) using peanut only made in Japan, which came through the idea of Mr. Sasaki.  Since it is so crispy and good, some customers buy them in bulk.  To keep the good quality of the product, Kakipea is not produced in large quantitiesass, so if you buy them, visiting the store in early hours is recommended.

The number of items is abundant, so you may get lost, but you can advise on how to choose according to the application.

Varieties of products are displayed, but you can have an appropriate advice at the store.

(From "~ Kamei-do Monogatata ~ Tokyo Shitamachi Story")

Quote from "Kameido Story"

*************************************************************

Around this time, Junichirou Tanizaki and Mrs. Matsuko came to shop. Tanizaki, wearing a black inverness, did not enter the store, stood at the end of the sidewalk, looked up at the signboard of the store, and sometimes looked into the store, but Mrs. Matsuko was close to the store and talked in various ways.

In these days, *Junichiro Tanizaki visited the store with his wife Matsuko.  He wore black inverness coat, did not get in to the store but stood at the edge of the sidewalk, looking up at the signboard, sometimes peeking inside.  Matsuko walked in and chatted with the shopkeeper.

*Junichiro Tanizaki: Japanese author, one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature.

*************************************************************

I'm a little glad if Mrs. Junichiro Tanizaki had a tiled rice cracker at home or brought it somewhere as a souvenir, and I think it's the same taste as at that time.

Did Tanizaki and his wife tasted the sweets at home or did they brought it to someone as a souveniour?  Kawarasenbei that you can have now tastes as same as their time.

In front of the store. JPGMr. Sasaki, thank you very much.

Please keep sending delicious sweets to the world forever.

Thank you very much Mr. Sasaki!

A great appreciation for the great story.

Shinkawa's hideaway cafe & bar KayGee's

[HK] April 26, 2016 09:00

I went to Cafe Bar KayGee's, a shop I've been interested in for a long time.

The location is between Minami Takahashi and Chuo-ohashi Bridge at Shinkawa 2-chome, and the arched entrance is a landmark on the first floor of an apartment on a narrow road slightly from the main street.

Just looking at the record jacket displayed on the show window, you can see that it is a shop that is particular about music.

Cafe Bar KayGee's, was one of the places I've been wanted to visit.

It is located between Minami-Takabashi (bridge) and Chuo-Ohashi (bridge), along the narrow street. It's arch shaped facade could be recognized as a mark.

By only looking at the records displayed at the window, you can easily tell that the place is for the music lovers.

CIMG1124.JPG

When you enter, you will hear a pleasant sound as expected, and you will be greeted with a friendly smile. (Owner Mr. Hotta)

As expected, smooth music and a warm smile welcomes you at the entrance. (Mr. Hotta, owner of the cafe)

CIMG1129 (2). JPG

The visit date was Saturday, but the lunch set had the same price as weekdays, 950 yen (including tax) sora beans and Shirasu pasta lunch.

The texture of raw noodles is delicious! It also comes with soup and salad. There is also a rice plate, and the menu seems to change every day, and it seems that there are ginger grilled and omelet.

The lunch set menu costs JPY950- through Mon. to Sat. which includes main dish, salad, and soup.

I tried Pasta for main dish, which the noodle is not dry but raw before boiled and it was delicious. Other choices change daily. (Pork ginger, Omlet, etc.)

CIMG1131 (3). JPGWhen I asked the owner, he told me that he was performing acoustic live such as Bosanoba and flute performances on an irregular basis.

The music charge is set for each performer, but the previous Bosanoba live was sold out immediately for 2,500 yen.

In the first place, the shop started by the owner's music lovers, and he wanted to create a healing space with high-quality music of various genres and delicious food.

Lunchtime on weekdays is crowded with people who work nearby, so if you want to spend a relaxing time, we recommend shifting lunch time or Saturday.

According to Mr. Hotta, the owner of the cafe, an acoustic live performances are scheduled non-regularly.  The music charge for the latest bosa nova performance was JPY2,500- which sold out at once, though the charge changes depending on the performer.

The place is Mr. Hotta's dream come true project where people can spend relaxing time listening to nice music and enjoy good food.

If you wish to touch the essence of the comfortable atmosphere, visiting weekday lunch might not be the right choice because a lot of business people come in on that time.  Recommends visiting in the late afternoon during week days, or on Saturdays.

Other than that, world-class judoists, including Olympic medalists, come to the store from time to time.

For more information, why don't you ask the owner directly at the store?

Believe it or not, a worldwide famous Judo athletes sometimes walk in.

For further information, please go visit and have a chat with Mr. Hotta.

Can't you believe it? Unbelievable?!

[HK] April 15, 2016 12:00

When I was walking along a narrow road near the police box at 6-chome to try tea at Tsukiji, suddenly found a mysterious apartment? !

As walking through narrow street somewhere around Tsukiji 6-chome, all the sudden, very strange looking appartment appeared!

The back of Tsukiji Honganji Temple (2.) JPG

I've seen it somewhere ... maybe Tsukiji Honganji's pacli?

I thought that the semi-cylindrical roof of Tsukiji Honganji was just coming out from behind the apartment.

I was surprised, so just one piece.

Although it looked very familiar, pretty much of partial mock-up of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple. The mystery was easily solved.  The appartment itself was built on the other side of the temple and the arch type roof of the temple just happened to show up. Took a snap shot since it was quite an encounter.

And I headed to my destination, Tsukiji Chabo, but it closed in the 45th year of business! Why? I hope it's a lie.

Headed to "Tsukiji Sabo", a local cafe, but eventually, had to find and admit a sad news on the door. The cafe closed down!  This cafe has been serving locals since 1972 and god help us why now?

Tsukiji Chabo 1 (2.) JPG

The coffee jelly here was exquisite. The price was also excellent at 200 yen, and on Saturday it was a price of 100 yen, half price! !

One of the best choices of this cafe was "coffee jelly with vanila ice cream on top" which only costed JPY200 and its high quality valued for money. On Saturdays, this masterpiece used to be discounted 50% and was served for JPY100.  Assume that this tragedy shocked all the local sweet tooth.

I was a little disappointed to lose the fine enjoyment of the weekend, but I revisited and went out to the main street, worshiped Tsukiji Honganji in front and headed to the next destination. But I still want you to be a dream.

Who cannot be upset when one has lost one's weekend pleasure. Just unbelievable. Perhaps nothing sweet can last forever, poor me and my coffee jelly・・・

Walked to front side of Tsukiji Hogwanji Temple and took a good look to cheer oneself up and headed to the next destination.

I found a shop! Live House in Ginza (Kennedy House) Look What I Found! A Live Music Performance in Ginza

[HK] April 2, 2016 14:00

I went to a live house in Ginza on the weekend.

The location is "Kennedy House Ginza" on the first basement floor along Ginza Corridor Street.♪

The day was the stage of the house band Super Wonderland (SWL).

A Miracle band that plays because of this band, group sound, fork, new music, rock, etc. And I'm very good at singing and playing. I'm intoxicated with Chicago, Bee Gees, and off-course singing with leader Tsukasa Ueda's hasky and high tone voice.

And I was impressed by the song of MIO, a female vocalist with soulful and outstanding singing skills.

Usually, the music charge is ¥2,160 (+ service charge 15% excluding food and drink), but on this day it was ¥4,320 (additional fee for other performers) because of the leader's birthday special live.

If you are craving for good music and nice refreshment in the center of Tokyo, "Kennedy House" in Ginza might be the right spot.

The main performer of this live music club is a band called "Super Wonderland" and this band can really play music.

Tsukasa Ueda, the leader of the band takes the audience away with his husky engrossing voice, singing Chicago, Bee Gees, Japanese pop music, and many more.

Mio, female vocalist of the band, touches everyone's heartstrings with her soulful voice, making breathtaking performance.

Music charge is normally JPY2,160(plus 15% service charge / food & beverage excluded), though it changes depending on the performance.  Ueda's special birthday live stage was JPY4,320.

DSC_0199 (2). jpg

I'd like MIO to sing Whitney Huston someday ...

Mio fascinates everyone with her soulful voice.

IMG_1079.JPG

I was conscious of Julie (?) It fits into the base while singing by Ikuya Chiba.

Bassist Ikuya Chiba stomps and pumps up the crowd. IMG_1052 (2). JPGAnd the young president of the live house, Yuki Kase, is a special appearance! (I'm handsome ♪)

A special performance by Tomotaka Kase, the President of the club house.

IMG_1067.JPG

Mr. Kase is actually a son who inherits the DNA of Kunihiko Kase of Wild Ones. As expected, the aura is amazing! Along with SWL, he sang his father's famous song "Nagisa of Memories" with a 12-string guitar.

After the performance, when I found an elderly woman customer, Mr. Kase, who pulled her hand and guided her to the seat, was very smart and impressive.

There are times when you just say that it's a homely live house.

There were three stages on this day, but the performers and the content seem to change from day to day, so I would like to try again.

Until now, I was interested in the live house, but I haven't visited it all over, but here it seems that I can drop in alone with peace of mind and take my friends and relatives who came to play from rural areas. When I asked Ueda leader, he decided on a song from a lot of repertoires according to the customer on that day.

By the way, on weekdays and nights, the seats are filled with businessmen in suits.

Tomotaka Kase is the son of the late Kunihiko Kase, one of the most famous and successful musician in Japan.   He played one of his father's greatest hits in '60s with his 12 string guitar.

The stage performance is very exciting and the place is so comfortable, you can almost forget your everyday life.

Also, the location is so good and safe, you can casually stop by or bring your friends and family over.
