◆Chuo-ku There is a history here (36) Samurai New Year's event Edo specialty "Kuki family's bill cut"

[Akira Makibuchi / Sharakusai] January 10, 2012 08:30

The new year has passed the pine tree. During the Edo period, samurai New Year's events were elaborated. The current Kabuto-cho, the Kuki family, who once set up a mansion here, set up a large pine decoration, and gradually enlarged and lowered the spelled tag on it over the seven days of the New Year. On the last day, if you take this bill, you will be lucky that year, so people will fight against each other. There was a special New Year event of Edo, which was called "Kuki Family's Fudagiri".

0913_36_120107kuki_fudagiri.jpgThe Kuki family is the lord of the 19500 stones of the Ayabe clan in Tamba (Kyoto), the Kuki Shikibu Shosuke family. During the late Tokugawa shogunate period, the Kamiyashiki, which was about 2,900 tsubo, was located on the east side of the Momiji River, near the Shinba Bridge and the banks of the Shinba River. Along the current Metropolitan Expressway, the central police station, the area near Sakamotocho Park, and now Ohara Inari Shrine are enshrined. The site of Chiyodabashi on Eitai-dori St. is also close (photo = the current situation near the site of the mansion).

The pattern is published in Kyobashi Local Room Newsletter No. 2 (Showa 9.1.1.1, published by Yachimachi Horiki 5, published by Kikuji Ando), so I would like to introduce it. (Note: Translation and summary of the original text)

All the pine decorations of the daimyo family were large and splendid, but the Kuki family was particularly solid, with 8 inches (approximately 24 cm) squares decorated with shimenawa sacred ropes, shrimp and oranges, and bills hung in the center of shimenawa sacred ropes. On the back of the bill, Haruaki nine characters (Suddenly Ritsuryo "Rin, Soldiers, Fighting, People, Everyone, Jin, Line, In front") was written. On the first day, those with a length of about 1 shaku and 5 inches (about 45 cm) and a width of about 3 inches (about 9 cm) grow every day, and on the seventh day, the length of 2 shaku (about 60 cm) and width of 4 and 5 inches (about 15 cm) ). There was a standing turn around Kadomatsu with six feet (about 1.8 meters) sticks.

At seven o'clock on the evening of the 7th (4:00 pm), the stick end enters the gate and closes Daimon. There are 30-50 people who try to cut the bills, and 3 or 4 such groups gather. To signal that Daimon closes, he rushed under shimenawa sacred ropes and jumped at the bill. The height is about 8 or 9 feet (about 2.7m), and when you finally jump, your friends will be attached and spin around together, so the rope will be twisted. Each group engages in fierce battles, such as disturbing and defending.

Finally, the group who took the bill raised the twisted person torso, shouted around the 5 or 6 streets around this area, shouted with Yosshoi and Yosshoi, shouted, and celebrated. In the house where the bills were cut, they were decorated with ships and household miniature shrine, and the year was lucky, gathering friends and holding a feast.

It is said that the Kuki family's bill cutting was a specialty of hundreds of people. The New Year decorations of the feudal lords each had their own characteristics. The Satake family's decorations do not stand pine, but place many people on the left and right of the gate. The Nabeshima family makes a drum body with straw on a pine decoration and decorates it. In the southern family, they decorated the salt sea bream with orange, noro, sacred horse straw, and kelp.

This year is 2012. The Daimyo residence has disappeared, but some of the New Year's events and traditions have been handed down. ●Akira Makibuchi
