The lantern festival of Sumiyoshi Tsukuda-jinja Shirine

[Shitamachi Tom] August 4, 2014 15:00

P1130074(2). jpgSumiyoshi-jinja Shirine, located in Tsukuda, is a venerable shrine founded with Ieyasu Tokugawa's entry to Edo. It is also famous for the rare "octagonal portable shrine" cruising in Reitaisai festival once every three years. At the last festival, portable shrine, which was newly built since the Edo period, was shown and became a hot topic.

The next festival is next year, 2015. It will be held grandly to commemorate the 370th anniversary of the shrine's founding. I hope everyone will look forward to it.

P1130077(2). jpgThat's why this year is the so-called "Yin Festival", so there is no cruising of portable shrine. However, every year's festival is held properly. This year, August 6 is the day of the festival, and it will be held quietly.

The festival, which used to be held in old calendar at the end of June, must have had the meaning of exorcism in Natsukoshi. At the height of midsummer, ritual prayed for health and thanked the joy of living.

Even in the year when there is no pilgrimage to portable shrine, it is customary to pray for the success of the sound health and the festival in the region. It is called the "Lantern Festival" from the place where you visit with lanterns from each town.

On August 2nd (Saturday), on the day of the "Danto Festival", in Kachidoki (a place where God takes a rest during cruises, a place like a shrine satellite), People wearing their own yukata (called "long clothes") gathered from each town. After worshiping at the shrine, the journey of worship begins in a row to Sumiyoshi-jinja Shirine.

The members of "Sumiyoshi Tsukuda" greet each other carefully, and worship the shrine together. After the priest's congratulatory speech and the representative, Tamagushi Hoden, he will receive sacred wine. Finally, the three closings resonated throughout the precincts, and the festival ended safely.

The men in downtown love festivals and humanity and look forward to the next year's Reitaisai festival. During a summer night, the river breeze of the Sumida River flowed faintly, and it was a scenery full of atmosphere and emotions.
