Don't miss this year's Tsukiji "Lion Festival"!

[Shitamachi Tom] June 3, 2015 09:00

Chuo-ku is a summer festival season from early summer to midsummer. In each region, historical and distinctive festivals are held. It is a valuable folk event that conveys Edo culture to the present day.

Among them, the “Lion Festival” at Tsukiji and Namiki Shrine, which celebrates the “main festival” once every three years this year, is expected to be held grandly. In the first place, this festival, which is handmade by the local love of Tsukiji-cho, is peaceful and dignified, but this year it seems to be even more attractive.

As you know, [Tsukiji Market] in the town will finally move to Toyosu next fall, and this year will be the last time that market participants will join together to excite the festival. During the main festival, Miya portable shrine travels to the market to celebrate the prosperity of the market and pray for the well-being of those who work on the riverbank.

H24_Tsukiji Festival 1.jpgOn the premises of Tsukiji Market, there is a shrine related to Kanda Myojin called [Mizu Shrine]. It was established as a place of worship for Mizukami, which was worshiped at its original location when the fish shore moved from Nihonbashi to Tsukiji. This shrine also holds its own ritual every year.

And at this year's Tsukiji "Lion Festival", the collaboration between [Nazuki Shrine] and [Mizu Shrine] will be realized. The extremely rare Shinto ritual will be carried out, with the portable shrine of both shrines lined up with memories of Tsukiji Market. Of course, it's the first and last.

Please take a look at this memorable ritual. Originally, "Lion Festival" was called "Natsukoshi Festival" and has the meaning of exorcism for a year. We hope that you will visit us to purify our evil spirits and survive this summer. And I would like to pray that this land will prosper even after the fish shore has been relocated.
