Shozo Matsuyama 1911 Café's first "Plantan" opened

[Yotaro] January 31, 2012 08:30

♪Dreams sometimes bloom from a cup of coffee ... (Ko Fujiura lyric)

IMG_0535.JPG According to the encyclopedia, coffee was brought by Dutch people who came to Nagasaki during the Edo period, but it seems that Japanese did not receive it. Nanpo Ota (Shusanjin), who worked in Nagasaki, wrote, "I can't stand it and taste it." In addition, Kano Siebold wrote, "It's strange that Japanese people who drink hot tea and like friends don't get acquainted with coffee." After the Meiji era, coffee shops and cafes opened and gradually became drunk, and according to statistics, it is now the third largest consumption in the world, with more than 10 cups per Japanese per week.

In March 1944, the first store called "Cafe Plantan" will open at 20 Hiyoshicho, Kyobashi-ku (currently Ginza 8-6). Seiki Kuroda and other Western painters Shozo Matsuyama (1884-1970), who studied with Seiki Kuroda and Okada Saburosuke at the Tokyo Bijutsu School, opened a European cafe in Temoto with a friend painter, Gonpachiro Hiraoka (1883-1943, and a member of the restaurant Kagetsuro in Takekawa-cho) in collaboration with a group of Kitahara Hakushu andOkada Saburosuke.

If it was my first time to call it a cafe, it was my first time to put a hand-held phonograph and play Western music such as classical and dance. Grape shelf at the entrance, large oil paintings drawn by Shozo Matsuyama were placed inside the room, and graffiti such as improvisation of visitors and caricatures were drawn on walls painted in white plaster, creating an atmosphere similar to a cafe in Paris. As for the menu, Western and Western sake are the main players rather than coffee, the specialties are hot sandwiches and macaroni, the sake is rich in assortment, and Western sake that is not familiar in Japan at that time were also prepared.

If so many celebrities gather, various anecdotes are left. Ougai's daughter, Mari Mori, was a young girl like a white hat, returned home from the Imperial drama taken by "Black Man" (Ogai), and drinking coffee for the first time in my life here. I put a hot coffee on my chest. ("Café Plantan of Memory") Also, drunk Shunro Oshikawa sold a fight with Kafu Nagai and Aoi Ikuta (Mt. Aoi), accompanied by the Tomoe family's Yaeji (later Seiju Fujikage). It was this shop. (Aoi Ikuta's "Plantan's Light at that time") Plantan was later pressed by Lion (Owari-cho corner) and Paulista (Minaminabe-cho), but it was a little threshold for ordinary people Is it partly due to the fact that it was considered a high shop?

The smoke of Macaroni and Mocha rises

IMG_0525.JPG Gonhachiro Hiraoka, who will draw his hand later, is the creator of the poster (1913) of "Kaidai Bijin" playing the biwa at Mitsukoshi Kimono Store. Shozo Matsuyama's child is the fifth generation of actor Kunitaro Kawarasaki (1909-1990), and his grandchildren are Eitaro Matsuyama (1942-1991) and Masaji Matsuyama (1947-). At the cemetery of Meiseiji Temple in Chofu City, Shozo, Taro Kuni, and Eitaro are one grave and sleep forever.

Take Yukio Mishima's "Bridge Tsukushi"-From Miyoshi Bridge to Bizen Bridge-

1. January 29, 2012 08:30

Yukio Mishima's "Hashizukushi" is a short story published in "Bungei Shunju" in 1956, a work when Mishima was 31 years old. Four women in the Hanayanagi world (two geishas, a daughter of a restaurant, and their girls) wished on the night of August 15th of the lunar calendar, and the conditions for fulfilling the "wish" are "I don't cross the bridge twice" and "I can't talk to anyone." Well, who is able to cross safely?

This "Seven Bridge Crossing" is said to be "On the full moon night, the folk religion that if you cross the seven bridges without talking to anyone, your wish will come true, became popular among women in Hanamachi during the Edo period." . It is not clear whether it was still believed in the Hanayagi world at the time of the presentation of the work, but after announcing "Kinkaku-ji Temple", "Spring too long", "Kan Narukan", etc., it was a novel by Mishima, who was a popular writer at the time. After the announcement, "Seven Bridge Crossing" became popular. There is a monument at the base of Miyoshi Bridge opposite "Ginza Blossom", and there is a part of this "Bridge Tsukushi" and a diagram of the bridge at that time.

100_0366.JPG

According to the report, "This bridge was built in 1929 (1929) as part of the reconstruction plan after the Great Kanto Earthquake, where the waterway connecting the Kaede River was cut down at the bent point of the Tsukiji River and the river became a three-pronged shape. Was. The emotional landscape has now been reclaimed and turned into an expressway, and has become an overpass."

I decided to walk while imagining the time when the novel was announced. At the time of the novel, it would have been a 1.2KM walk to Tsukiji Honganji, about 15 minutes walk. ・・

First of all, hats, masks, and large sunglasses (convenience store robbery style!) Is completed. Well, I'm leaving. The description of Miyoshi Bridge is as follows.

100_0367.JPG

"A rare three-pronged bridge over the three-pronged river line, the railing of the bridge is low, and each of the elegant Suzuran lights stands at the three corners that shape the triangle. By crossing two sides of the three-pronged, you crossed two bridges."

100_0382.JPG

"Tsukijibashi is a bridge with no taste. The four stone pillars of Hashizume also have a tasteless shape."
→I dropped out due to abdominal pain

100_0373.JPG

The name "Irifunebashi" was written in white on a vertical iron plate that could not be seen at night, either green or black on a low stone pillar of Hashizume. "

100_0368.JPG"I saw a poisonous white pillar in my way. There is a white paint on the pillars that I noticed with concrete in a strange shape."

→A little bow, an acquaintance told me to drop out

This Akatsuki Bridge and the seventh bridge, Bizen Bridge, have been reclaimed and turned into Tsukiji River Park. There are stone pillars at the entrance and exit of the park.

100_0370.JPGOriginally, there should be "Sakae Bridge" between "Akatsuki Bridge" and "Bizen Bridge", which was described as "a small Sakae Bridge with only a green iron plate", but could not be found . According to other materials, it seems that it was around "Tsukiji 7-chome 2". ・・

"Bizen Bridge, protected by the green balustrade, is a light slope of Arched bridge with a parabolic line. A concrete pillar shaped like a shamisen box is marked as Bizen Bridge, and there is a light on the top of the pillar. Masako, a policeman questioned and answered, and dropped out.

As a result, only one person was able to cross the seven bridges. Did the "wish" come true? I can only cross six, not at night due to photography reasons, but forget to "wish" before starting to cross! I'm here. (I can't win the lottery again this year.)

Mishima wrote a dance script for Kosaburo Nishikawa after the novel of "Hashizukushi". More than 40 years have passed since that shocking death. He was 45 years old when he died! I wanted you to write a lot of new Kabuki works and become "Showa's Silent Ami"! And while walking along the trace of the bridge, I felt as disappointing as it is now.

Chuo-ku Railway Monogatari <Part 4> "Disappearing Station Name"

[Shitamachi Tom] January 25, 2012 08:30

This is the fourth talk about railways in Chuo-ku today.
This time, I will change my viewpoint a little and explore the name of the station that is no longer available.

Toei Nihonbashi Station Signpost _R.JPG

First of all, it is Nihonbashi Station on the Toei Asakusa Line. The entrance of the station is located on Showa-dori. It is connected to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Tozai Line through the underground passage, but compared to the two stations with bustling locations such as [Takashimaya] and [Cored Nihonbashi], the station on the Asakusa Line feels a little calm and quiet.

Exit of Toei Nihombashi Station _R.JPG

It should be that, in the first place, [Nihonbashi] station on Asakusa Line was another station. When the Asakusa Line (which was called "Toei Line 1" at the time of opening) opened in 1963 (Showa 38), it was [Edobashi] station.

Certainly, there is "Edobashi" right next to it, and I feel that it is more straightforward as a station name.pencil

Near Edobashi _R.JPG Since then, it was renamed Nihonbashi in 1989 for the purpose of uniting, due to an increase in the number of passengers connecting with Tokyo Metro (at that time, "Mitsui Subway").

By the way, the station name [Edobashi] is located in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture as a Kintetsu station station. It's strange that the station name that disappeared from Tokyo now exists far away.

Another station that existed in Chuo-ku is [Nishi Ginza] station.

The Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line runs only a little in Chuo-ku. It's just near Sukiya Bridge. There is an entrance to [Ginza] station on the Marunouchi Line at the intersection of Sukiyabashi, where [Hankyu Men's Museum] and [Lumine] are recently renovated and bustling [Yurakucho Marion] stands out in front of you, but this is exactly the past [Nishi Ginza] station.subway

Marunouchi Line Ginza Station _R.JPG

When the Marunouchi Line opened in 1957 (Showa 32), it started as a [Nishi Ginza] station. It seems that there was already a [Ginza] station on the Ginza Line, and it was a little far away.

Later, when the Hibiya Line was opened in 1964 (Showa 39), the station on the Marunouchi Line was renamed [Ginza] along with the opening of [Ginza] station on the same line. [Nishi Ginza] was a naming for just under 7 years.

Sukiyabashi Intersection _R.JPG

Even today, the name "Nishi Ginza" remains in the shopping mall under the elevated expressway.

One of the popular songs sung by Frank Nagai is "Nishi Ginza Station". This song written by Takao Saeki and composed by Tadashi Yoshida is a modern song that begins with "ABC XYZ". It was launched in 1958 (Showa 33), the dawn of Japan's high economic growth. Along with "Let's meet in Yurakucho", which was released the previous year and became a big hit, surely the atmosphere around here was filled with a new sense.note

 Nishi Ginza Arcade _R.JPG

Including the abolished Toden station name (electric stop name), there were various names in the ward. For example, tasteful names such as [Mihara Bridge] and [Echizenbori] seem to see the scenery.eye

This time, I looked back on the post-war history of Chuo-ku, taking advantage of the two disappearing stations of the subway. Did you have a little nostalgic feeling?

Next time, I would like to deliver an episode related to railways. Thank you very much.cat

Historical Transition of the Tsukiji Market 1 (the value of the riverbank was 200 million yen in the past)

[kimitaku] January 21, 2012 08:30

Tsukiji Market has a fish department that handles many seafood and a fruit and vegetable department that handles fruits and vegetables.
Both are open early in the morning and are crowded with many customers.

sakanabu.jpg seikabu.jpgThe fruit and vegetable section is located along the Shin-ohashi-dori St. in the market, and the fish section is located along the Sumida River.

Compared to the fish section, the fruit and vegetable section is quietly operating without shouting.
The fish club boasts the largest handling in the world.

Today, Tsukiji Market is a relocation issue, and it has been talked about in various ways. From the end of last year, it seems that negotiations have begun in earnest. In November, there were various types of pier surveys on the Tokyo side. It may be difficult yet.

TUKIJISANNBASI.png By the way, in the market, the place that deals with seafood is called the riverbank. The rights of banks were valued at 200 million yen during the bubble period.
This is the amount assessed by a financial institution that it is worth a loan of 200 million yen with this right. Nowadays it is not so valuable, and it is said that millions of yen are the market price (the story of related parties).

Here, I would like to unravel the history of the market from the Edo period.

Edo Castle was built by Michio Ota in the Middle Ages on the site of Edo's mansion in the first year of Choroku (1457).

At that time, the population seemed to be less than 3,000, and until the relocation of Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1590, the market was Shibahama: There is now Shiba Shinmei, Minato-ku (Rakugo of Danshi Tatekawa: famous for Shibahama), and in front of the Imperial Palace Hirakawa Gate (in front of the current Mainichi Shimbun), there is a four-day market where the city stands on the fourth day (mainly dried fish). did.

HIRAKAWAMON.jpg After entering the castle, Ieyasu destroyed Kadoyama as part of the Edo promotion measures, reclaimed Hibiya Inlet with the earth and sand, and created the entire Nihonbashi area. At that time, the flow of the Hirakawa flowing from north to south was changed to the east, which became the Nihonbashi River.
After Nihonbashi was built, the city stood on both banks of the Nihonbashi River, bringing seafood, fruits and vegetables, and all kinds of goods from various directions, enriching the town of Edo.
In addition, fruits and vegetables go down Arakawa from the whole Kanto area, especially from Kawagoe area, and seafood is transported by boat from Edo Bay, Tsukuda Island, Shiba, and far away from Gyotoku area, climb the Sumida River, enter the Nihonbashi River, line the riverbank. Was lined up.

I'll continue next time.

Heike Monogatari and Suitengu

[North Yujin] January 19, 2012 08:30

NHK Taiga drama series "Taira no Kiyomori" has started.

"Suitengu", which has been worshiped at Nihonbashi Seven Lucky Gods and as a palace for safe delivery and child care, is located at Nihonbashi Kakigaracho 2-chome.

First of all, main hall of Tokyo Suitengu Shrine.

There is an explanation board with "Oyu" written below the approach stairs.

I'll introduce you.

enshrined deity Tenchu Lord Ogami (Okami of Ame no Mikanushi)

        Emperor Antoku the 81st generation

The Nakamiya of Emperor Takakura, the mother of Emperor Antoku, Tokuko, the name of the mother of Emperor Antoku.

The wife of Taira no Kiyomori, the name of Emperor Tokiko, the grandmother of Kenreimon-in, the grandmother of Emperor Antoku

Our company was founded in 1818 (1818) at the Arima clan residence in Akabane, Minato-ku, where then Yorinori Arima ordered chief priest to feudal lord the spirit of Suitengu in his territory (Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture) to enshrin the branch office in the clan residence.

It is said that the Suitengu in Kurume was founded about 700 years ago. It was created that one of the Heike women who lost in his Dan-no-ura battle escaped the eyes of Genji and fell near Kurume, and worshiped the spirits of Emperor Antoku, Kenreimonin, and second-ranked nuns who entered with his family.

It is said that the Suitengu Shrine in the Edo period was located in the clan residence, so the common people could not usually worship and threw money from outside the gate to worship. However, only on the 5th of every month in fair, the clan's residence was opened and worship was allowed. At that time, a pregnant woman worshiped at that time received a pin of Suzunoo (a bleached bell ringing a bell) and prayed for safe delivery as an abdominal belt, so this benefit spread to people because it was very cheap. . At that time, the popular word that expresses the liveliness of Suitengu Shrine was the fashionable word "Suitengu of Nakearima".

The clan's residence was requisitioned by the Meiji Restoration, and Arima's residence moved to Aoyama, and was enshrined in Kakigara-cho as of November 1, 1872.

The shrines were also damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake, but sacred object of worship evacuated to Shin-ohashi Bridge over the Sumida River and escaped the difficulties. After that, the reconstruction of the shrine was completed in 1930 and became the shrine hall of Gongen-zukuri as of 1967.

Let's take a look at Hongu online.

This is an image of "National So Motomiya Suitengu" located in Seshita-cho, Kurume-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture.

newyear 014.JPG

I would like to introduce the explanation of enshrined deity Yuo.

  enshrined deity

    main deity of the heavens

    Emperor Antoku (Antoku)

    Takakura Taira no Chugu Shrine

    No. 2 nun

  Origin

After the battle of Dan-no-ura on March 24, 1185 (C.E. 1185), Ise, who served the Takakura-Hiranakagu Shrine, came to the Suitengu Shrine for the first time in the vicinity of the Chitose River (now Chikugo River). At this time, the world of Chikuhi was still unclear, and it was just a desert wilderness. Today, there is Shimo Nomura across the river, but the nearby place name Sagigahana is said to have the old name of the time remaining.

Ise later shaved his hair and changed his name to Chiyo, and performed praying for Kamochi while being asked by a villager, but as Arata of the spiritual test, it became more and more revered, and the company name was praised as Ama Gozen Shrine. Was called Amagozen Shrine.

At that time, he visited Chiyo from Higo, the grandson of Sir Tomomori Tairano, the fourth son of the fourth-ranked general, Tairano, and then adopted it as his successor. After the death of Chiyo, he ran the grave of a villager and planted pine to pray with Chiyo Shomeijin. The woman is the daughter of a priest at Ishigami Furu Shrine (currently Isonokami-jingu Shrine), and the tomb is located in front of the main gate of Asahi Corporation in Kurume City, and the Okutsu Castle Festival (Tombmae Festival) is served every spring. Have been.

Our company has not only had a strong faith among agriculture, fisheries and sailors since ancient times, but also heard as a child's guardian angel, a god of safe birth, or a high spirit of prayingEmperor Meiji's birth, and His Majesty Emperor Komei prayed to the Palace.

It is a famous shrine attached to the forbidden prayer place (imperial prayer place) on October 3, 1868 after the remnants of the spirits.

 Seat

It was founded in the first year of the Kenkyu era (1190 AD) on the banks of Chikugo River, Saginogahara, and then moved to various places to avoid soldiers, and there are many places that are said to be ruins of return. In the Keicho era, he moved to 1-chome Shinmachi, Kurume City, and in September 1650 (1650 AD), Tadayori Arima, the second generation of feudal lord, donated hisshrine hall and transferred to the present location.

Since then, he has been honored by the 9th feudal lord Yorinori Arima, and was particularly revered. On November 1, 1818, he was invited to the clan residence of Edo Mita. After that, it was transferred to Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku as of 1871, and this is the current Tokyo Suitengu Shrine.

In addition, the Suitengu Shrine, which is enshrined in various places such as Japan and Hawaii, is all Obunrei Shrine whose main shrine is our main shrine. Incidentally, there is Maki Shrine on the grounds of the Imperial Palace, which enshrines the 22nd Mizutenmiya Miyaji, a pioneer of the Meiji Restoration who dedicated his life to the restoration of the monarchy as the leader of the Emperor during the turbulent period of late Tokugawa shogunate.

As mentioned above, it was Emperor Antoku who was born with Taira no Kiyomori's second wife, Tokiko (second-ranked nun), entered Emperor Takakura and was born. In other words, in Suitengu, Emperor Antoku, his mother Tokuko (Kenreimon-in), and his grandmother Tokiko (second-ranked nun) are enshrined.

Taira no Kiyomori has Shigemori Tairano with his first wife, Akiko, and Munemori Tairano, Tomomori Tairano, Moriko and Tokuko with Tokiko.

I think everyone knows the "Heike Monogatari" that begins with "The voice of the bell of Gion Seisha, there is an impermanence sound, ..."

Kenreimon-in entered the water with a family member when the Heike was defeated in the Battle of Dan-no-ura, but was helped and lived his life at Jakuko-in in Ohara, Kyoto. In Heike Monogatari, "Ohara Miyuki", where cloistered Emperor Goshirakawa visits Kenreimon-in, is a famous place.

"Kikaigashima", which is familiar in Kabuki, is a story that Toshihiro and others will be exiled due to the Kagaya incident, but a pardon ship will come, . It was said that this pardon was due to a prayer for safe delivery at Kenreimon-in, which pregnant Emperor Antoku.

I would like to enjoy a TV drama while thinking about the three people who are enshrined in Suitengu.

Chuo-ku Railway Story <Part 3> "JR Underground Station"

[Shitamachi Tom] January 11, 2012 08:30

Bakurocho Station _R.JPG

Are you spending your time with the New Year?

We will resume a series that introduces the history and episodes of railways in Chuo-ku. This time, I would like to take up the underground station of JR running in the city.fuji

JR's predecessor was the Japan National Railways (Japanese National Railways), but in 1972 (Showa 47), when the Tokyo-Kinshicho was opened as the first underground track of the Japanese National Railways, "Nipponbashi" And "Bakurocho" have been installed. It was quite rare at that time.

Bakurocho Intersection _R.JPG
"Bakurocho" station is located around Bakurocho, famous for its wholesale district, and is also used as a transfer station to the Toei Asakusa Line and Shinjuku Line.
Above the station, the scenery of Tokyo where cars come and go spreads, and it is difficult to create that the JR Trunk Line runs below it.

This "Bakurocho Station" has been famous as the "lowest station in Japan" since its opening.

Keiyo Line Tokyo Station _R.JPGThere is a platform about 30 meters below the ground.

After that, Tokyo Station on the JR Keiyo Line was further established, and Yoshioka Kaikyo Line (in the Seikan Tunnel), which is the lowest above sea level, was established, so it seems that the name was returned, but it seems that it was long and deep station Has been longed.

It has a friendly relationship with Nobeyama Station (Komi Line), which is famous as the highest station during the Japanese National Railways era, and a commemorative object has been set up on the station premises.apple

Shin-Nihonbashi Station _R.JPG

The next station, Shin-Nihonbashi Station, is located in Nihonbashi Muromachi.

There is a subway "Mitsukoshi-mae" station in the immediate vicinity, and it is a convenient place close to "Kanda" station.

Nagasakiya Remains bulletin board _R.JPG

In this area, there was a [Nagasakiya] in the Edo period that Nagasaki Mayor Dutch trading post (Capitan) stayed in Edo when he came to Edo for an audience with the shoguns.

 Hatchobori Station _R.JPG

Another thing to remember is Hatchobori Station on the JR Keiyo Line.
This was opened in 1990. It's a transfer station to the Hibiya Line.
It was a town where power and concentric lived in the Edo period, and at the same time, it was also a logistics base utilizing water transportation, and even now most waterways have been reclaimed, you can feel the atmosphere of the past.
It's also good to walk around the Sumida River.shoe

If you think that not only commuter trains but also limited express trains such as [Narita Express] and [Wakashio] are running underground in Chuo-ku, this town is a town where various people come and go after all I think.

Well, go on the train today to discover the charm of Chuo-ku! train
