Edo Momiji-dori Street is located between Showa-dori Street and the Metropolitan Expressway, which spans about 1 km north-south from Nihonbashi 1-chome on the east side of Nihonbashi Post Office to Nihonbashi 3-chome on Yaesu-dori Street.
Here, "Japanese maple" is planted as a street tree. It is derived from the fact that the leaves become "Iroha Nihoheto" and the palm shape of about 7 splits, and is also called "Iroha Kaede" or "Takao Kaede".
The Metropolitan Expressway on the east side was opened in line with the Tokyo Olympics, but before that it was Horiwari called Momijigawa.
Looking at the pictures from the early Edo period, there is a moat on the current Yaesu-dori Street, which is called the "Momiji River". At the same time, several Funairi moats were dug and were in contact with the Kaede River.
The riverbank on the Kaede Kawanishi side, which corresponds to the present 'Momiji-dori Street in Edo,' was a major base for the accumulation of timber supplies as Motozaimokucho. This is the origin of the present 'Kiba'. After that, a fish market was established between today's Chiyodabashi Station and Shinbabashi Station, which was called 'Shin Uobaba Station,' alongside the Nihonbashi Fish Market. This was a “new place.”
Based on the history from the early Edo period, was this road named "Edo Momiji-dori"? It is said that the names of Momiji-gawa River and Kaede-gawa River are derived from Momijiyama in Edo Castle. The name of Momijigawa was a name that was familiar to the local community, such as the fact that there was once a metropolitan Momijigawa High School in the area of the present Central Police Station. ●Akira Makibuchi
