New Bridge on the Sumida River

[Sumida Fireworks] April 19, 2014 09:00

Currently, we are building a new bridge at the lowermost part of the Sumida River, but I saw it because I had the opportunity to see it from the top the other day.

The upper part of the photo is downstream.

The left is Kachidoki, and the right is the Tsukiji / Hamarikyu Garden.

The bridge legs seem to be quite completed, so I think the bridge girders will be installed soon. I'm excited to imagine the completed figure.

This bridge is a bridge connecting Tsukiji and Kachidoki in Chuo-ku, and the road called Ring Route 2 passes.

It will play an important role as a new market that replaces Tsukiji, a coastal area, and a road leading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics competition area.

Until now, the bridge at the lowermost part of the Sumida River was Kachidokibashi, which has reigned as the "gate of the Sumida River" for many years.
Kachidokibashi was established in 1940 before the war (Showa 15), the year when that "Phantom Tokyo Olympics" was scheduled to be held.

In addition, Tsukuda-ohashi Bridge, one upstream bridge, was also created in the last year of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 (Showa 39).

That's why the three downstream bridges of the Sumida River will be bridges that reflect the times of each Tokyo Olympics.

This new bridge will be the new "gate of the Sumida River", but I want future generations to become a bridge called a famous bridge.

The name has not been decided yet, but I hope it will be a suitable name.
