I think many of you know that Yaesu is derived from Yan Jooss Ten.

Jan Jooss Ten, a navigator on the Dutch ship Reefde, drifted to Japan in 1600. He became an international affairs advisor and interpreter for Ieyasu Tokugawa, and the area around the given residence was called "Yatsushiro Su" from his Japanese name "Yayosu" and eventually became "Yaesu". Was.

By the way, "Jan Jooss Ten" is his name and his last name is "Jan Rhoden Stein".

In addition, the captain of the Reefde is the Englishman William Adams (Anjin Miura).

Next to the memorial statue is a panel display of the route followed by the Reefde, a picture of a Dutch ship, and a map near Tokyo Station in the Edo period.

In addition, there is the "Yang Jooss Ten Monument" at the median strip of Nihonbashi 3-chome intersection, which goes out from the underground shopping center to the ground (lower right in the photo below).

The rings of two compasses are combined into the shape of a celestial sphere.

On the left is Jan Jooss Ten, and on the right is Reefde.

At the top of the center, the mark of the Dutch national policy company East India Company at the time is drawn.

This monument was built in 1989 to commemorate the 380th anniversary of Osamu Nichiran.
