Joto Elementary School in Chuo Ward is located in a building area in front of the Yaesu Exit of Tokyo Station. Its history dates back to the early Meiji era, and the school building has survived as a reconstruction elementary school for the Great Kanto Earthquake, but it is now attracting attention that due to the redevelopment plan of the surrounding block, it will become an elementary school that enters the building, which is rare in Japan. I have. I would like to follow the history of Joto Elementary School. (The photo above shows Kyobashi Showa Elementary School at the time of completion in 1929 (1929), and the current school building with a remnants below the photo)
In the Edo period, this area east of Edo Castle is Tooricho-suji, where the Tokaido runs north and south. On the east side, facing Edo Minato, it was an important base for the world's general contractor. It has supported the development of Edo as a craftsman town, as the name of the old map writes.
Joto Elementary School is based on Takarada Elementary School (formerly 3-chome Motokigicho, Kyobashi-ku, along Kaedegawa), which opened in December 1873 (1873). The reason he claimed Takarada was probably because Shinemon Takano, village headman, Minami Temmacho, was moved from Takarada Village, which was in Edo Castle.
It was separated from Takarada Elementary School and opened in April 1906, but was Minamimakicho Elementary School (formerly Minamimakicho 4, Kyobashi-ku). This is the place where the current Joto Elementary School is located. In the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, all elementary schools in the ward, including both schools, were destroyed.
As the reconstruction elementary school was constructed under the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Plan in Tokyo City, the two schools will be merged and rebuilt as Kyobashi Showa Elementary School. According to the materials of Tokyo City at that time, the school area was 1051 tsubo, reinforced concrete, three-story building, completed with the construction of Takeda Gumi in March 1929.
After the war, Kyobashi Showa Elementary School was merged with Nihonbashi Joto Elementary School (formerly Nihonbashi 2-6, Ura Maruzen) in 1962 to become the current Joto Elementary School. The school name was named in the hope of "It is located east of the former Edo Castle (Imperial Palace) and prays for its prosperity like the morning sun."
The current school building remains the reconstruction elementary school at that time, and is a modern building that conveys history. There are seven reconstruction elementary schools in the ward, of which only four are used as elementary schools, and one of them will disappear with a history of 87 years. I would like to look forward to the new school building in the building for the coming new era. @ Akira Makibuchi
