Nihonbashi of Kidai Shoran

[Nyan me] 16:00 on January 1, 2018

Speaking of monuments near Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, the lion statue is famous, but my recommendation is "Kidai Shoran" in the underground concourse in front of Mitsukoshi.

The picture scroll was discovered by Hans Joachim Custer, a professor of biology at the Free University of Berlin in Germany, and his wife Inge, in the attic of his relatives' house. The Custer and his wife are collectors of Chinese art, and they deposited this picture scroll with their own Chinese artwork at the Berlin Art Museum. At first, it seems that this was considered a Chinese picture scroll, but in the early summer of 1999, Tadashi Kobayashi saw this picture scroll taken out of the collection of the Orient Museum of Berlin, and lived in the town of Edo It is not hard to imagine that you would have been excited about the historical and artistically valuable book scrolls that have been carefully written about the customs of the people.

The Hirodai Shoran seems to have been described as "Heaven", so it's exciting to think that there may be a set of "earth" or "people". A documentary painting that knows the time.

There are 1,671 characters. Of these, there are 1,439 men, 200 women, 32 children, 20 dogs ... etc. The fact that there are many men seems to be a characteristic of the town of Edo at the time. The number of dogs is large, and the "Ise family Inari and dog droppings", which is said to be a specialty of Edo at that time, is well drawn.

It is a spot that you want to stop by to see expressive people such as birds and beasts caricatures and loose characters now, to learn about various occupations and craftsmen, and to know the lively breath of Edo.

Please refer to this booklet for details of the Kidai Shoran. (Shogakukan)
