Traveling in a movie Western Europe: EU Film Days 2018

[Hanes] June 3, 2018 12:00

Hello. This is a new correspondent, Hanes.
From 26th (Sat) at the National Film Archive (formerly the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Film Center).
EU Film Days 2018, which shows selected films from EU member countries, has begun.

I've been looking forward to the next event since I went to see "The Whereabouts of Goodwill" (Netherlands) and "Prosecutor, Adviser, Father, and Son" (Bulgaria) last June!
I used to watch famous fiction movies like "Harry Potter" before, but I used to watch a famous fiction movie like "Harry Potter".
Due to the influence of the host mother who took care of me while studying in the UK, I was able to do so.
Although it is not widely disclosed in Japan, he is also interested in works that have been highly evaluated in the production country.
I went to see if I had the opportunity.

The movie I chose on the first day of this event was "Kitz-sensei's Children" (Netherlands / original title: De kinderen van juf Kiet)!
With immigrants and refugee children who came to the Netherlands after escaping the war from Syria
This is a documentary film that captures the true days of Mr. Kitz, who is responsible for them.
What a Japanese premiere
The growth and life-size problems of each child are captured.
The innocentness of the child often caused laughter.

Since this movie will also be screened at venues in Kyoto and Hiroshima, I will refrain from commenting on spoilers, including spoilers.
We will introduce a little behind-the-scenes story of shooting and production from guest talks with directors Petra Rataster Zish and Peter Rataster.

■Encounter with Mr. Kitz
In the Netherlands, the low wages of teachers are regarded as a problem.
It seems that the two directors initially wanted to create a movie that could appeal to the teacher's status.
So I asked if there were any interesting teachers in the network between teachers.
It seems that this led to an encounter with Mr. Kitz.

■Building relationships with children
Since the shooting took place on the first day of the new semester on September 1, both of the directors seemed to be seen like teachers at first.
The children gradually become accustomed to being in the classroom.
It seems that they have come to accept both sides.

■The school is shooting location
Some immigrants and refugee children have complex family circumstances.
However, this film mainly focuses on children growing up at school.
This was decided when I first talked with Mr. Kitz.
He said that he should give priority to leaving the children's thoughts in the movie, not the teacher.
Therefore, the shooting was performed at the height of the children's eyes.

EU Film Days 2018, where works from 25 of the 28 EU member states will be screened.
There are also times when guest talks by directors and other filmmakers are held.
It's a valuable opportunity to touch and delve into and understand European movies.
Why don't you take this opportunity to travel to Western Europe with a movie?Airplane

[Small story]
It was the first time I went to see a movie since I became a national film archive.
I realized that the design of the ticket has changed.
