I visited Seibo Kitamura's work (Lighthouse & Peace Prayer Statue)

[GPP] July 13, 2018 18:00

I visited the work of sculptor Seibo Kitamura (1884-1987), who continued to work on peace even after the age of 100.

First of all, "Todai" in Sukiyabashi Park. It is a statue wearing a helmet, offering a torch on the right hand, and obeying a lion.

It was established on September 1, 1933, 10 years after the Great Kanto Earthquake (September 1, 1923).

The other place is Seibo Kitamura's masterpiece, "Peace Prayer Statue". It was installed in the Peace Memorial Park in Nagasaki in 1955, ten years after the atomic bomb was dropped.

(I visited Nagasaki in May 2018. The hidden Christian heritage of the Amakusa region in Nagasaki and Amakusa region was a trip to many places of prayer just before receiving the recommendation of World Heritage registration....)

The Peace Prayer Statue has a unique pose. The right hand pointing to heaven represents "the threat of the atomic bomb", the horizontally extended left hand represents "peace", and the lightly closed eyelids have the idea of "praying the souls of the atomic bomb victims." .

The lantern and the statue of Peace Prayer are both strong youth statues, and when you look closely, you can feel that they were created by the same sculptor.
