Discover Chuo City : Billionaire who lived on the grounds of the Catholic Tsukiji Church

[Hanes] 14:00 on December 11, 2018

Hello. This is a new correspondent, Hanes.
If you say, “A billionaire once lived on the grounds of the Catholic Tsukiji Church,” do you believe?
When I first heard this story, I couldn't believe it.

DSC_3162.JPG

He was not a believer, but a story before the Great Kanto Earthquake.
There is no document about the person in the church, and "Is there no such thing?"..."I thought, then
At a museum in Ibaraki Prefecture, I happened to know that it was true.
This time, through such a true story of a lie,
Here are some scenes of the history of Tsukiji, which was rarely known before.

The time was after the war. In Japan, there were three billionaires called the "Three Choja after the War".
Yonetaro Otani, former sumo wrestler and founder of Hotel New Otani
Shunji Minami, President of Osaka Shipbuilding Works
And this is Hiromi Kikuchi, a coal mine owner who will be the main character of this time.

In the neighboring Minato-ku, there is the Hiromi Kikuchi Memorial Museum of Art,
Some of you may have heard his name.

IMG_0734.JPG

Born in Batomachi, Tochigi Prefecture, he went to Tokyo with his uncle Fujitaro Yamazaki, who had been successful in the coal mine.
At Yamazaki Shoten, located on the canal in Irifune-cho, it was an apprentice to unload coal in the Sumida River.
At that time, there were few houses with indoor bath, so there was one public bath in one town.
He seems to have gone to a public bath to wash away the dirt of coal and coal.

Irifune-yu. jpg
(Maybe it's a hot water!)

Soon he got married and started living in Akasaka Reinanzaka near the American Embassy and Hotel Okura.
After that, I will move to Tsukiji Akashicho.

"In 1921, the family moved from the house of Reinanzaka to Tsukiji Akashicho. This house was a building attached to the church adjacent to the Catholic Church in the middle of an old settlement, and was owned by the Pope. It was built before 1877, and is a fine Western-style building that was old but was built in brick. The second floor was used as a residence and the lower floor was used for the office of Tatsunokuchi Coal Mines. It was more dignified than worthy of the residence of emerging Chengkin. "
"Hiromi Kikuchi Den" (Daishin Juku, 1979), p. 180. ※Not for sale

"In 1921, when the waves of recession after the recession rushed, Kanmi moved. It was my fifth year of marriage. It moved from Akasaka Reinanzaka to Tsukiji Akashicho. The new house was not a new building, but a Western-style building attached to the Catholic Church, owned by the Vatican. It is old because it is 45 years old, but it is a Western-style building with red bricks and is still rare at that time. Why did you get this house? According to his daughter's wisdom, Kanzane was given over when the Archbishop of the Vatican moved to Reinanzaka. Of the two Western buildings, one was used by the company and the other was home. This Akashicho is close to the mouth of the Sumida River, and the view is not bad along the river. Until a few decades ago, the restaurant that the river wanted was quite a breeze. Originally, only after the so-called Tsukiji Reservation in the first year of the Meiji era, the remnants of the Reservation were still known as the New Tokyo Landscape in the Taisho era. "
Mitsugu Saotome, "Like a Worry: The Life of Hiromi Kikuchi" (2008, Hara Shobo), p. 119.

Coal mines. jpg
(Photo taken at the Takahagi Coal Mine Museum (Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture))

Kanzane decided to move after the loss of his house due to the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The state of the church at that time is recorded as follows:

“Neither the power of the Roman cloistered Emperor, nor the sumptuous Western architecture, nor the ability to resist before the earthquake. The earthquake caused a fire, the fire called the wind, and the fierce wind fueled the fire and burned Tokyo. (...On the third day of aftershock, he struck a stake on the site of the burnt ruins of Irifune-cho, and set up a barrack. (...() Kanmi started his work with the ballack as early as possible, and then again built a ballack at the old residence in Akashicho. This site is large, so open space can be used for coal storage. What I couldn't say very much when the church was crouching in a majestic atmosphere is the good thing that the earthquake brought about? Who can imagine that the site of the church would become a coal storage area? Because this Akashicho is surrounded by the Sumida River and the digging, the convenience for water transport was ideal for transporting coal. " (Saotome, pp. 124-126)

Coal. jpg
(Photo taken at the Takahagi Coal Mine Museum (Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture))

It may be unbelievable, but the building on the church premises, which the synchronous correspondent, Minato-chan, also introduced the other day.
Once used as a coal mine office, it has become a coal storage area.
And it is also a place where we saw the young days of Hiromi Kikuchi, who will become a millionaire later.

Office. jpg
(remain, office of Takahagi coal mine)

One time at Tsukiji, a man who supported Japan's development with black diamonds,
There is little left in the existing literature, and it is being forgotten.
However, in Tsukiji Akashicho, which has a strong impression as a foreign settlement, it is also on the grounds of the church.
Isn't it really surprising and interesting that such a person lived there?

In this way, interesting biography is still sleeping in Chuo-ku.
In the future, like digging coal, I would like to "mining" people's biography.

[rosemary sea] 12:00 on December 11, 2018

"Gifts, and Enjoy yourself" is Rosemary Sea.

IMG_20181127_124828 (2)a.jpg

I would like to introduce the long-established Japanese paper shop in Nihonbashi, Haibara.

haibara_logo2.jpgMr. Haibara has been founded in 1806 (3 years of culture) and has been running for more than 200 years.

We handle a wide range of paper products from Japanese paper and Japanese paper accessories to stationery and letter sets.

From the imperial family to past prime ministers, British rock stars and Queen Freddie Mercury, we have been able to meet the needs of everyone.

We also have a lot of relationships in production.

Yumeji Takehisa, Kyosai Kawanabe, Hoitsu Sakai, Zeshin Shibata, etc.

The history was mentioned in the February draft, so I will do so here.

This time, I would like to introduce Japanese paper accessories and pochi bags. So from the Japanese paper accessories...

Chiyogami small box a.jpg in the store

Haibara's original Chiyogami is made into small items.

While using traditional motifs, it has a unique color and composition, and still has the same taste.

We carefully select items that are easy to incorporate into modern life, and products such as small boxes, small items, and notebooks made using Japanese paper are lined up.

Chiyogami Box

There are boxes that suit your application, such as a business card size Chiyogami small box and a Chiyogami postcard box that contains postcards.

Hexagonal brush tubes. jpgHexagonal brush tube

This is a foldable brush box.

In addition to brushes and pens, it can be used to organize small items such as glasses and remote control.

It is a product that is easy to carry because it is sold in a flat fold.

I wonder if it's good for souvenirs overseas.

The middle paper is carefully finished with high-quality paper with a smooth writing taste and thread binding that opens 180 degrees.

It is a flower pattern that matches the season with each season.

There is a wall hanging calendar and a tabletop calendar.

Xmas Art Festa 2018 in Ginza

[Ginzo] 09:00 on December 11, 2018

The annual Christmas Art Festa is held from December 7th to 15th.

I have been there on December 7th, the first day, so I will report.

①At Ginza Yanagi Gallery, Kitao Bontemps Reiko exhibition was being held. With familiar customers, the gallery had a peaceful atmosphere.

DSCN3023.JPG

Kitao Bontemps Reiko, who was married to a Frenchman, obtained permission to copy it at the Louvre Museum, went for three years to study paintings such as Rembrandt. Ever since I was a kid, I loved the Aesop story. In the picture of this exhibition, animals such as foxes and lions that appear in the Aesop story are depicted in a still life painting.

DSCN3024 (400x300). jpg

I was able to buy a tote bag for the work.

②At the Shinpodo Gallery Ginza store, wonderful botanical art was displayed under the name of the "World Exhibition of Plant Painting".

DSCN3001 (400x300). jpg

Three works of the artist "Laguna Tama" were exhibited. Otama is from Shiba, Minato-ku, married Italian Vincenzo, and after that, when her husband opened a craft school in Palermo, Otama was a teacher in painting. It's a wonderful plant painting.

③At the Nichido Gallery, the 57th Minion Exhibition was held, and many works were displayed narrowly on the wall.

DSCN3008 (400x300). jpg

I enjoyed the wine and enjoyed watching the work.

④At Yasushiyama Gallery, there were many works by young artists. I have expressed my desire to develop it. There were many affordable works that cost less than 100,000 yen.

⑤At the Etsuko Shibata Gallery, the exhibition of Bijuki Tateo was held, and a picture with the white texture of baby powder using rock paint was displayed. It was a fantastic painting.

All of you, please go out.

Remains of the 15 wards of Tokyo Prefecture

[Asunaro] 09:00 on December 11, 2018

In 1878, starting from Kojimachi Ward, where the Imperial Palace is located,

Write the word "no" clockwise.

Kojimachi, Kanda, Nihonbashi, Kyobashi, Shiba, Azabu, Akasaka, Yotsuya, etc.
Ushigome, Koishikawa, Hongo, Shitaya, Asakusa, Honjo, Fukagawa and 15 wards were established.

Nihonbashi Ward and Kyobashi Ward merged on March 15, 1947, and there is the current Chuo-ku.

Kyobashi Tsukishima Post Office _ 400.jpg

The name of the Kyobashi Tsukishima Post Office is a remnant of Kyobashi Ward, Tokyo Prefecture.

The scenery mark is "Tsukishima Nishinakadori Shopping Street and Monjayaki Hera"

Landscape seal _400.jpg

<Scenery mark: Photographed in August 2018>

While there are quite a lot of buildings from the Taisho era to the Showa era in the city, there is also one side where high-rise buildings are lined up like bamboo shoots after rain. Take a leisurely stroll through the Tsukishima area where there are lots of fun besides Monja

How about? Look for an easy flow.

Why don't you go to Harumi Pier in the evening?

[kimitaku] 18:00 on December 10, 2018

We took a walk on Harumi Pier in a sunny evening in autumn. During the day, there is a time of hustle and bustle due to the construction of Olympic-related facilities, but from the evening, a wonderful night view spreads all over. kimitaku4_20181127.jpg kimitaku3_20181127.jpg From October this year, Toyosu Market Toyomi Ohashi has also been added. Especially in the Toyosu market, the entire building emits light and is even more beautiful. ・・・ ・To go to Harumi Pier. ・・・・・ It is a 20-minute walk from Tokyo Station by bus bound for Harumi Wharf and a zero-minute walk. It is about a 20-minute walk from Kachidoki Station on the Toei Subway.
