200 years with Japanese paper [History] 2-Washipo Haibara ~

[rosemary sea] February 9, 2018 18:00

It's rosemary sea, which looks over "gifts and I enjoy myself".

1505_053a In-store view 2.jpg

Here is the article two times before by Haibara, a long-established Japanese paper shop in Nihonbashi.

⇒ /archive/2017/10/post-4699.html

Last time, here is the history 1.

⇒ /archive/2018/02/post-4946.html

1505_059a In-store view 3.jpg

This time, it is 2 of the history edition divided into two parts.

This time, I also took care of Yoko Nakamura, a spokeswoman for Haibara Co., Ltd.

Then...

In the Taisho era, with the development of industry, new measuring instruments were imported from foreign countries, and the need for the development of measuring paper used for them came to be called out.

In response to this, Mr. Haibara succeeded in producing measurement record paper for the first time in Japan in 1919, making full use of printing technology since its founding.

After that, the business was hit hard by the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II, but it surpassed that and succeeded in stabilizing the business.

In 1964, he established a printing factory for measuring and recording paper.

Due to its high quality, the measurement record paper was adopted in the American Apollo program, and in 1969, he boarded Apollo 11 and went to the moon to play a major role in lunar surveys.

In addition, measurement record paper is used for a wide range of applications such as electrocardiograms and land surveying.

We also handled office supplies and other items, and have built a system to respond to the IT age.

In 2015, with the completion of redevelopment, a new store was constructed along Chuo-dori, relocated and opened. .

"Yes, I'm sending a fan of Hara."

"Edo in Edo, where chickens rang, may be a silk fan with Hara's grilled sign."

In 1898, Shiki Masaoka wrote about Mr. Haibara.

Since the time of Bunka Bunsei, woodcut fans have been a popular product of Mr. Haibara along with Ganposhi.

For Mr. Haibara, April 14 is the day of "Uchiwa Hajime" every year.

It seems that many people came to the store in search of a new fan, and it became a feature of early summer.

I put Mr. Haibara's fan into a yukata belt and pay fireflies.

It seems to have been used like fashion.

Also, as Shiki Masaoka wrote, it seems that it was well known as a representative Edo souvenir.

As I mentioned last time, Haibara's original drawings of fans are leading painters of the time.

Mr. Haibara continues to share the joy of "enjoying art in life" with customers, incorporating works of artists that symbolize each era into fans that people use close to them.

Above: Yumeji Takehisa, write notes below: Woodcut handprint postcard "Yumeji no Journey"

I can't help but talk to Mr. Haibara from the Taisho era to the early Showa era.

Yumeji, famous for his lyrical beauty paintings, worked on many designs for Mr. Haibara's stationery, picture envelopes, postcards, Chiyogami, fans, advertisements, etc.

Yumeji was a designer of Mr. Haibara, as well as a customer who purchased Japanese paper necessary for his work.

In addition, there is an anecdote that he has a deep friendship with Mr. Haibara's fourth generation, Naojiro Haibara, and was helped when Yumeji traveled to Western Europe.

haibara_logo2.jpg

The history of Mr. Haibara is also the history of our customers.

While aggressively devising new products, products that have been loved by customers for a long time with the same design are also valued.

"Improve and grow goodwill."

・・I have been working hard every day.

200 years with Japanese paper [History] 1-Washipo Haibara ~

[rosemary sea] February 6, 2018 18:00

1505_016-21b Store exterior. jpgThis is rosemary sea, which looks intow and covers "gifts and enjoy yourself".

Here is the previous article of Haibara, a long-established Japanese paper shop in Nihonbashi.

⇒ /archive/2017/10/post-4699.html

We handle a wide range of paper products from Japanese paper and Japanese paper accessories to stationery and letter sets.

1505_071 In-store notice a.jpg

This time, I would like to introduce you to Mr.

However, I can't tell you at least once, so I'll introduce it in two parts.

This time, I also took care of Yoko Nakamura, a spokeswoman for Haibara Co., Ltd.

Then...

Haibara was founded in the early Edo period in 1806 (3 years of culture).

I have been doing business in Nihonbashi for more than 200 years.

Mr. Sasuke, the first generation, became independent after serving, and started trading paper, ink and medicine.

As for paper, handling high-quality and beautiful goose skin paper (Ganpashi: refer to the previous article), it became very popular with the people of Edo.

As depicted in the noren, it is the birth of "Gange Paper Haibara".

Goodwill at 1505_062a jpg

In addition, small items such as Chiyogami, Dan fans, and stationery, which are decorated with woodblock prints on Japanese paper, have also become their main products.

From the end of the Tokugawa period to the Meiji era, Japanese paper was widely introduced to Western countries through various expositions.

Meiji 6 (1873) Vienna World Exposition

     1878 Paris World Exposition

     1879 Sydney World Exposition

     In 1888, Barcelona World Exposition

These awards are given to the international community to demonstrate the high level of Japanese culture.

Mr. Haibara's Japanese paper products went to Western Europe.

     The Victoria Albert Museum, UK

     The Glasgow Museum

Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, France

It's stored in the library.

They are said to have influenced Japonism that spread throughout Western Europe in the latter half of the 19th century.

On the other hand, in Japan, we worked early in the current trends of Civilization and enlightenment and handled Western paper.

Mr. Haibara's tag and storefront in the Meiji era have a large sign saying "Western paper goods".

Naojiro Haibara, the third generation, joined Ryuikekai (the predecessor of the Japan Art Association), which was formed in 1883 for the purpose of restoring Japanese art.

In 1891, he was assisted in the establishment of the Japan Youth Painting Association (later the Japan Art Academy).

Above: Postcard Shibata Zeshin "Hanakurabe", below: Shibata Zeshin Treasure Ship

Shibata Zenshin, Shibata Shinya, Ayaoka Yushin, Kawabata Gyokusho, Kyosai Kawanabe ...

I will deepen exchanges with leading painters of modern times.

And we asked many original drawings of Mr. Haibara's products, such as fans, fans, and woodcuts.

This seems to be the cornerstone of the "Haibara Design" that continues today.

In 1887, he served the interior of the Meiji New Palace, such as ceilings and wallpapers.

As a result, His Imperial Highness Prince Arisugawa Miyatoshi, who was also the president of the Japan Art Association, said, "Haibara's products are a ball with a ball." I received the dyeing brush of "Jyugyoku".

・・・ Continue to the next time.
