◆There is a history here in Chuo-ku (48) Edo's original "Kiba", with autumn leaves coloring-"Edo Momiji-dori"-

[Akira Makibuchi / Sharakusai] December 11, 2012 08:30

Entered Shiwasu, according to the calendar, "heavy snow", and from December 7 to 11 in the 72nd climate, "closed winter" (sorasamukufuyu). It seems to be cold this winter. Autumn feels like it passed by in no time, but finally! There is a place where the autumn leaves have begun.

0913_48_121210momijidoori.jpg"Edo Momiji-dori" is located between Showa-dori and the Metropolitan Expressway, which stretches about 1 km north to south from Nihonbashi 1-chome on the east side of Nihonbashi Post Office to Nihonbashi 3-chome on Yaesu Street.

Here "Japanese maple" is planted as a street tree. It is said that it is also called "Iroha Kaede" or "Takao Kaede" because the leaves become "Iroha Nihoto" and "Iroha Kaede".

The capital highway on the east side was opened in conjunction with the Tokyo Olympics, but before that it was a moat called Momijigawa.

Looking at the pictures of the early Edo period, it is said that there is a moat on the current Yaesu-dori, which was called the "Ajimi River". At the same time, several Funairi moats were dug and bordered Kaedegawa.

The riverbank on the Kaede Kawanishi side, which is equivalent to the current "Edo Momiji-dori", was a major base for the accumulation of timber supplies as Motozaimokucho. This is the starting point of the current "Kiba". After that, a fish market was set up between the current Chiyodabashi and Shinbabashi along the line with the Nihonbashi Fish Market, which was called the New Fish Market. This was a new place.

Did this road be named "Edo Momiji-dori" based on the history from the early Edo period? The name of the Momiji River and Kaede River is said to be derived from Momijiyama in Edo Castle. The name of Momijigawa was a name that was familiar to the local community, such as the fact that there was once a metropolitan Momijigawa High School in the current central police station. ●Akira Makibuchi
