Toya Kitamura Toson Shimazaki Monument

~ Monument of Meiji literary greats who graduated from Yasuaki Elementary School ~
Yasuaki Elementary School was established in 1878 as the 17th Elementary School Yasuaki School in Daiichi Junior High School District, Daiichi University District.
At that time, the Ginza area was decided to be a city lined with non-combustible buildings based on the reflection of the great fire that occurred in 1872, so a school building made of red bricks was built.
In 1999, it was selected as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Historic buildings.
Kitamura Tokoku (1868-1894), a pioneer of modern Romantic literature, and Toson Shimazaki (Toson Shimazaki: 1872-1943), a representative writer of naturalist literature, graduated from our school in 1882, and Fujimura in 1884.
At the entrance of the school, there is a monument engraved with "Toson Shimazaki Kitamura Toya Children Learn Here".

Toya Kitamura and Toson Shimazaki Monument
Yasuaki Elementary School opened in June 1878, and Toya Kitamura and Toson Shimazaki were early graduates.
Toya Kitamura (1878-1894) was born in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and moved to Yazaemon-cho, Kyobashi-ku (currently Ginza 4-chome) with his family in 1881 and went to Yasuaki Elementary School.
After that, he was attracted to the Liberal Rights Movement and decided to become a politician, but later turned to writing and worked as a literary critic and poet.
In 1893, Tokoya, who participated in the magazine "Bungeikai", advocated liberalism in literary arts and was said to be the pioneer of modern romantic literature.
Representative works include "Sosoyunoshi", "Horaikyoku", and "Enseishika and Women".
Toson Shimazaki (1872-1943) was born in Magomeshuku, Nakasendo (now Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture), moved to Tokyo in 1881, and went to Yasuaki Elementary School from his sister's wife (now near Ginza 4-chome) in Yariyamachi, Kyobashi Ward.
After that, my sister and wife returned home and went to the school while staying at the home of the same family, and graduated.
Fujimura, who deepened his interest in literature while studying at Meiji Gakuin, was deeply influenced by Toruya through the activities of the literary world.
Representative works include "Wakana Shu", "Spring", and "Before Dawn", among others, "Hakai" is said to be the pioneer of naturalist literature.
In addition, Fujimura's book "Kids Day" and "Osana Monogatari" depicts the childhood of Fujimura who spent in Ginza.

Miyuki Street and Gate
It is said that this street came to be called Miyuki Street because it became a street when Emperor Meiji was sent to a naval school from Miyagi.
The gate was also used by the aristocrats of Southern France at that time.

Yasuaki Elementary School opened in 1878, and the building currently in use was rebuilt as a reinforced concrete school building with high earthquake resistance and fire resistance after the Great Kanto Earthquake.
It is a building of an architectural style called expressionism, and is characterized by its appearance using curved walls and arch windows.
The entrance, located at the southern end of the L-shaped school building, is decorated with unique decorations on pillars and entrance eaves, making it the face of the building.
These designs are unique, which are rarely found in other elementary schools built during the reconstruction period.
In addition, the windows on the side facing the schoolyard are larger than other schools, giving an open impression.
The ivy-shaped school building is popular with people as a symbol of Ginza, and still retains the scenery of the past.
