A small life in the Edo broom

One of the recommended souvenirs of Chuo-ku, "Shino-Karahoki" is a product of Shirakiya Nakamura Denbei Shoten. Bamboo is used for the handle, and the other part is woven grass, a broom about 36 cm long. With this broom, the parlor is quicker to the floor of the floor from the original, and small to scrape out the dust in the carpet, the corners of the furniture, the groove of windows and doors will be smooth and clean.

Birth of "Edo Hokiya Nakamura Denbei Shoten"

Birth of "Edo Hokiya Nakamura Denbei Shoten", a small life with Edo broom.

Founded in 1830, we interviewed Satoru Nakamura, the seventh generation owner of Tenpo (1830).

During the Edo period, Kyobashi was an important bridge under the direct control of the Shogunate, along with Nihonbashi and Shimbashi. This high-class bridge was decorated with "giboshi" on the balustrade to distinguish it from other bridges, and the area inside the three bridges was called "giboshi" to support the prosperity of Edo through business and other means.

When the Kyobashi River was flowing, we carried goods by boat from the region, and the area where the shop was located was a bamboo riverbank lined with green bamboo. The map of the bamboo riverbank drawn by Hiroshige Ando (Utagawa) is also used as a handbag for Denbei Shirakiya.

It has been around for nearly 200 years since the production and sale of "Edo Hoki", a land rich in raw materials and easy to purchase.

The Edo broom is a broom made of grass called "Hokimorokoshi" of the Riceaceae family. (left side of the photo) It is light and firm, and can be used for rugs such as parlors, floorings, carpets, and all rounds. It seems to be recommended for beginners. Because it is vegetable fiber, static electricity is not generated, and it is also used to treat clothes and pet hair. The materials have not changed since the foundation, and the quality is graded by selecting good or bad according to the sense of the craftsman's hands. It is said that 20 is also graded. The design is simple and smart like Edo kid. If you use it and your tip hurts, cut it out with scissors, use it as an entrance or outer broom when it becomes smaller, and use it as fuel for BBQ if you are dismissed. Living things don't become garbage, but go back naturally.

Palm palm is a broom that combines the bark of "Palm Palm". (On the right side of the photo) Palm tree has been around for 1,000 years, and it is a strong tree that grows more and more than 5 meters when planted, and good fibers can be obtained from a durable skin, so it has been used as a material for making daily necessities such as brooms and scourers. With a soft feeling of use like a mop, it is possible to gently sweep dust and garbage that accumulates on the floor toward flooring. It is a tool that can be used for a long time with the durability of materials.

Palm scourers are active in the kitchen. You can wash the unevenness of vegetables without difficulty, and dishes and cooking tools (stainless steel, hollow, iron pot) are clean without damage. It is a practical product that is resistant to water and does not mold or rot. In addition, vegetable waste falling on the floor, hair and dust in the washroom can be easily removed by broom and dust removal. There are also small brooms that can be used around clothes, tables, and personal computers.

When I was a child, many houses had tatami rooms, and brooms and vacuum cleaners coexisted. If you use the broom again now, you will be surprised that the surroundings will be easily and quietly clean. Tools made by careful handwork practice the SDGs in individual homes without using electricity. The technology that has not changed since the Edo period has the user of Denbei Shirakiya and the heart of thinking about society, saying, "A society without burden on the environment will be the next generation!"
