Nashizono dyed towel "Oedo Nihonbashi" (Todaya Shoten)

A long-established "Nashien Somedodaya Shoten" located close to Ningyocho Subway Station. This shop's pear garden dyeing hand towel "Oedo Nihonbashi" was selected as the first place in the mono category of "Chuo-ku Recommended Souvenir-Central Tokyo Premium Selection-" hosted by the Chuo-ku Tourism Association.
I visited the shop and talked to Takuya Kobayashi of the sales department. The company's 150th anniversary in 2022. At the time of its founding, it was said that it was a fabric wholesaler dealing with cotton and hoods (cloths used for lining of kankins and kimonos).
"Nearen dyeing" is the main brand of Todaya Shoten, and is a dyeing method that uses a technique called "Chusen", which dyes are poured and dyed while using pattern paper. The front and back of the fabric can be dyed in the same way. Since each Tenugui is handmade, there is nothing the same as one.
Tenugui is said to have been used since the Heian period, and was widely used in the Edo period as a commoner.
The pear garden dyeing hand towel `` Oedo Nihonbashi '', which ranked first in the mono category this time, is lined with rivers, bridges, shops, people, etc. in the Nihonbashi area in collaboration with designer Shino Kamogawa, and the bustle of the town It is a work that was colorfully expressed. The gradation unique to pour dyeing is also beautiful. It can be said that it is one of the representative souvenirs of Chuo-ku.
The beautiful Tenugui feels wasteful to use, but it's a daily necessities in the first place, so it's good to use it, and it's OK to decorate it. It seems that you can enjoy changing the color gradually after washing many times.
More than 500 kinds of Tenugui are always displayed inside the Todaya store, which is spectacular. We also have tailor-made Tenugui.
When I asked Mr. Kobayashi about the charm of Chuo-ku, he said, "While the old-fashioned atmosphere remains, new people do not refuse, and the place is wide." .
Be sure to visit the shop and enjoy the wonderfulness of traditional techniques.
