Meet Meijiza-150th Anniversary of Meijiza-in Nihonbashi Library

The history of Meijiza dates back to 1873 (1873). On April 28, 1873 (1873), a theater was built on the south side of the current Hisamatsu Police Station and opened as Kishoza. After that, as shown in the figure above, the names were changed to Hisamatsu-za and Chitose-za, and in 1893 (1893), the theater where the first Sadanji Ichikawa was destroyed by fire was rebuilt and renamed Meijiza. After that, the theater was rebuilt after overcoming the burnout caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 (1923) and the Great Tokyo Air Raid on March 10, 1945 (1945). Meijiza was reborn as a state-of-the-art theater in May 1993 (1993) with the aim of becoming a theater with a full range of facilities for disaster prevention and fire prevention after having been burned down five times in the past.
