Edo Kiriko's Store Flower Glass
This time, I went to Edo Kiriko's store Hanasho, which has a store in Nihonbashi Honmachi.
In 1946, he opened his first workshop in Kameido, Tokyo, and was initially subcontracted by a manufacturer.
In the 1990s, the second generation Ryuichi Kumakura launched his own brand and began selling it. Since then, he has continued to send works with high artistry and originality to the world.
The connection with Chuo-ku is that Edo Kiriko itself originated in Nihonbashi in the first place.
In June 2016, Kanigar opened a store in Nihonbashi Honmachi, and Nihonbashi stores are located in a retail store.
We play a role in delivering excellent works made at the workshop in Kameido to our customers.
In addition, it also plays a role as a base for transmitting Edo Kiriko culture through customer service and Edo Kiriko experience courses.
It is one of the most popular shops in the Nihonbashi area because it is ideal as a souvenir and gift, so it is not only Japanese but also overseas visitors as customers.
What is Edo Kiriko?
What is Edo Kiriko in the first place? I would like to talk about it.
In a nutshell, it is a beautiful craft created by skilled craftsmen with fine patterns on thin glass.
In 1834, Kubei Kagaya, the current bedro shop in Nihonbashiodenmacho, carved the surface of the glass using Kongo sand.
It is said that the pattern was applied to the beginning, and it is a very closely related craft to Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku.
One of the major features of Mr. Kanigar is the design of unique patterns with high artistry.
And in the process of "polishing", the craftsmen thoroughly carry out "hand polishing".
Edo Kiriko itself is an era that can be easily purchased by mail order other than Hananiku.
In Edo Kiriko, which is made by mass production, it is produced efficiently by processing such as "acid polishing and washing" using chemicals. It is customary that Edo Kiriko made by "acid polishing and washing" is inexpensive, but it does not produce gloss, etc., and in terms of quality, it is less than "hand polishing".
For Mr. Kanigar, thorough “hand polishing” without spareing a great deal of effort and effort.
Regardless of beauty, gloss, and fineness, the highest quality Edo Kiriko is sent to the world.
This time, I saw various kinds of Edo Kiriko.
↓As you can see, each one was completely different depending on the difference in color and pattern, all of them were very artistic, and just looking at them gave a sense of excitement.
Edo Kiriko of Hananiku's synonymous "Rice Tsunagi"
The turning point for Mr. Kanigar was this "rice bridge", which can be said to be synonymous.
Invented by the second generation Ryuichi Kumakura, this design expresses gorgeousness by applying a cut that looks like rice grains to the glass.
This was highly evaluated both in Japan and overseas, and at the G8 Lake Toya-ko Summit held in Hokkaido, Kanigar's rice-linked wine glass was adopted as a gift to the heads of each country.
In this way, while maintaining the traditional design, he devised his own delicate and beautiful patterns, and continues to provide highly satisfactory Edo Kiriko.
The spirit was passed down from Ryuichi Kumakura, the second generation to Takayuki Kumakura, the third generation, and the Edo Kiriko as a culture continues to spread not only to Japan but also to the world.
I was taught about the production procedure of Edo Kiriko.
I've been asking you about the six steps involved in the production of Edo Kiriko this time, so I would like to introduce it (you can see it at the shop)
①The process of covering the transparent glass with colored glass (in this photo is transparent + blue)
※Glass itself is procured from outside sources
②A flower glass craftsman draws a draft line horizontally and vertically (like a blueprint for the pattern of this glass).
After that, actually cut it
※It does not completely follow the draft line.
※A tool like a grinder is used for cutting.
③As a result of shaving the outer colored glass, a white line appears on the transparent glass.
④In addition, the process of cutting with high precision is performed.
In doing so, the pattern is adjusted by using various types of blades appropriately.
⑤The shaving process has been completed. From here, we will start the polishing process.
This polishing process is a very technical and labor-intensive process, and it is the secret to making Kaniku's Edo Kiriko a unique and excellent work. The craftsmen of Hananitr without compromise will polish them with outstanding skills.
⑥The "polishing" process of Edo Kiriko is completed and the work is completed.
I didn't know at all until I had you explain it.
This time, it turned out that a lot of effort and technology are being used.
Mr. Hanani was very active in expanding the base of Edo Kiriko culture, and when I visited this time, he explained in various ways in this way.
In addition, in the Nihonbashi store (advance reservation system is required), Edo Kiriko experience course was prepared.
↓It was equipped with such equipment, and if you are interested, you may try it.
Excellent access! Ideal for walking around Nihonbashi
The site of Koshodo in Juzaburo Tsutaya, the Edo period, which was featured in Taiga drama series in 2025, is also a short walk from here. Edo Kiriko is a very compatible item.
Wouldn't it be a good idea to stop by while strolling around the land related to Juzaburo Tsutaya?
