NHK Taiga drama series "Berabo-Eikano Yume Story" has started.
Juzaburo Tsutaya, who was famous as a publishing producer in the Edo period, what kind of appearance was it?
The picture above is a picture that is often used as a portrait of Tsutashige, and appears as a printer in the preface of Kyoden Santo's yellow cover "Hakoiri Musume's Mermaid" and states his mouth.
Under the title of "serious mouth", Tsutashige sits straight and holds his hand. In this year, in conflict with publication regulations due to the reform of Kansei, Kyoden was sentenced for 50 days of hand chain, and Tsutashige was confiscated half of his property. For this reason, the content of the preface is that I somehow asked Kyoden, who has recently lost motivation, to write a new work, and Tsutashige is taking a pose that he is asking for.

The picture below is a still young Tsutashige about 34 years old, drawn in the Kyoka book "Yoshiwara Odorikai".
It is a picture depicting the banquet of a Kyoka singer held in Yoshiwara, and the lower left is Tsutashige (Kyoka name: Tsuta Karamaru). At the banquet, Tsutashige published the author of this Kyoka book, Harumachi Koikawa (Kyoka name: Sake Inschi), Nanpo Ota (Kyoka name: Shikata Akara) and Hoseido Kisanji (Kyoka name: Tegara Okamochi), etc. The author of the yellow cover and Kyoka book published by Tsutashige are also depicted.

Tsutashige was a young producer, but when you look at the picture, there are many pictures with low waist and lower head. It seems to have a gentle and gentle appearance with a medium thickness and a thin face.
Tsutashige died in beriberi, which was called "Edo Wazurai" at the time. I was 48 years old.
At Shoboji Temple in Higashi Asakusa, where the monument to the ruins of Tsutashige's burial ground is located, there is an inscription by Masamochi Ishikawa and Nanpo Ota called "Karamaru Tomb", and from the birth of Tsutashige to the end, Tsutashige's personality is also written as follows.
"When he became a person, he was particularly good at aspirations, personality, and wisdom, did not care about small things, and treated people with trust."
At Shoboji Temple, there is a tombstone of the ancestor of the Tsutaya family (Kitagawa family), a memorial monument for Tsutashige and mother, and a Banrei Tower.
Unfortunately, Tsutashige's tomb was lost in the past fires, earthquakes, and air raids, but every time the temple returns to ash dust, successive head priest gathers the remains and keeps them in the Manrei Tower.
"Berabo," and Edo words
By the way, the story changes, but it is often used in the drama title "Berabo", and in the drama "This Beraboga!" or "Berabome!" "Berabome!" 。

"Berabo" was originally "Yes. A fool. "Ah, it's a word for people. It has the suffix "me" and is used as "berabome!" It has evolved from the words that pass on people, and has come to be used as an Edo language (dialectual), which means "out of common sense", "outrageous", and "terrified".

The words used by townspeople and craftsmen in Edo Shimomachi are called "Beranmee-tone", but this "Branmee!" "Belabome!" A word that has evolved from that. "Belane! This is an Edo kid! "
