Edo Temmacho prison house and city tour

In January, at a history lecture at the local Tenmonkan in Akashicho, I attended Professor Hideaki Ino's "The World of Kodemmacho Robudges" and went to Kodemmacho. Jisshi Park, Jushi Square, and Daianrakuji Temple, located near the intersection of Ningyocho-dori and Edo-dori St., had a prison in the Edo period. From the Keicho era to 1875, it survived for about 270 years until the prison was reached in Ichigaya, and it is said that over hundreds of thousands of prisoners sent from all over the country were sent.

There was an execution site in guardian of children and travelers, "Dai Anrakuji Temple" built for the memorial service of prisoners who were executed. It is also the place where Yoshida Shoin, who was in prison in Ansei, died. In Jushi Square, there is the Chuo-ku Machikado Exhibition Hall, where the prison is reproduced with a model.

The surrounding area is covered with moats and banks are built. Inside the site surrounded by fences, there are a prison building, a chisel (interrogation), a torture warehouse and a neck slashing place, as well as a residence of a prison magistrate and a tenement house concentric. The area was 2,618 tsubo. The prison magistrate, who was in charge, was a hereditary system for generations, served by Ishide swords, and there were about 40 to 80 prisoners under the control, and about 50 officials called prisons who took care of prisoners.

It is said that there were overdefinement of 300 to 400 prisoners and sometimes 900 people. The role was a place where sinners and sentenced prisoners were detained, and a place where prisons were enforced. The prison was divided by his status.

Customs

The prison was a complete self-government system by prisoners, and it was a world beyond authority even by officials. There was a strict identity system, and prisoners who were said to be prisoners, led by prisoners, ruled the prison. No one can be put in a tatami mat and are not allowed to lie down and sleep. For the first time, a prison official was questioned for a crime and strictly taught the rules within the prison.

The meal was served twice a day with brown rice, soup and pickles. The summer was hot, the winter was cold, and there were no windows, so there was no sunlight, poor ventilation, poor nutrition, poor health, and poor health, and diseases such as skin diseases were widespread.

As the number of people in prison increased and hindered their lives, assassination was performed for those who disrupted discipline, and he was unable to blame "I died of illness." Misconduct was rampant, and it was "the hell of the world."

A bell of compassion

Jisshi Park has the "Kokumachi Bell", which is said to be the first bell of the Edo period. It was delivered to Nihonbashi Kokumachi during the time of the second general, Hidetada. It was about 2 (approximately 218m) from the place where the prison was located, but since the execution was executed with the sound of the bell signal, it was deliberately sounded late to take care of the inmate's feelings. It seems to have been also called the "bell of compassion". What kind of thought did Shoin hear this bell? There is a monument engraving the phrase of resignation, "The body must not be decayed in Nobe of Hisato Hi Musashi." The "Kunimachi Bell" was abolished in the Meiji era, but was relocated to a reinforced concrete bell tower built in Jisshi Park in 1930. At present, the bells are contradicted only on New Year's Eve.

Edo-shi

Among the various punishments in the Edo period, the heaviest was death, and some of the guilts differed depending on the crimes committed, such as the head prison gate, fire prison, sawing, and beaming. The heaviest punishment was to be killed after being sold through the city. In particular, at that time it was bound by the identity system in feudal society, so the incident that shakes its foundations, the child murdered his parents, the landlord and village headman killings were turned around, the bow gate, the arson was turned around and fire, the tsujiki, the sale of fake drugs, and the forgery of money were also guilty. The city's rounding was an event that accompanies the punishment.

The sinner was tied and put on a horse, and in front of it, a lower-ranking official with his name, age, and guilty walked and surrounded by four to five powers and concentrics. In his shabby appearance, sympathy was gathered among the sinners, and there was also coins to dress up, put prayer beads on his neck, and buy alcohol and tobacco on the way to avoid dissenting the politician.

The market tour departed from the back gate of the prison in Temmacho, walked clockwise along the outer moat, and never went inside. Many went around the town where the townspeople lived and showed them to many people.

There are two courses. In the case of a behead, he returned to the prison, and crucifixion and fire were taken to prisons in Suzugamori and Kozukahara. It was a big event that took a whole day on a course of about 28 km (the total length of the Yamanote Line is 34.5 km).

Depart from Jisshi Park and go to Kodemmacho, Horidome-cho, and Kofune-cho. Crossing Edobashi from Kobuna-cho, you will see the Mitsubishi Warehouse building and the Nihonbashi Post Office, the birthplace of the postal system in Japan. After passing Nihonbashikabutocho, where securities companies are lined up, we enter Kayabacho. When Ieyasu Tokugawa entered the prefecture, there was a kaya grassland, where merchants who traded the kaya used as the material for the roof lived. After that, reclamation progressed, and the neighboring Hatchobori was home to many powers and concentrics.

As you proceed along the Metropolitan Expressway at the site of the Momiji River, you will find "Matsuhata Bridge", which is an expressway both above and below. In the blog of Tokyo Dumbo the other day, it is a bridge that runs through a viaduct with pigeon damage countermeasures. Cross it and pass through Takaramachi to Kyobashi.

Kyobashi is a bridge built by the world contract held during the Keicho era, and was rebuilt several times thereafter. The Kyobashi River is a waterway built at the same time as the excavation of outer moat, with a length of 600 meters, good water transportation, and a variety of goods carried. The bridge was removed when the Kyobashi River was reclaimed in 1959 after the war, and the main pillar of 1875 was preserved.

After this, the road will continue to Ginza and Shimbashi and head to Minato-ku. The pedestrian paradise in Ginza was also deserted in recent circumstances. Chuo-ku had a deep edge in the shadow of Edo, a prison where murders and acquisitions are rampant, a city tour for show, and a shadow part of Edo, a modern city. Knowing a part of history, it seems extra valuable that it is now a place for relaxation.
