Stone is the narrator of the times! The town of Edo seen at the site of Echizen moat

Hello. I'm the active correspondent Hanes.
As announced in the previous article on "Reishi Island Seven Wonders", this time I would like to pay attention to Echizen moat and Matsudaira Echizen Moriyashiki among the mysterious islands.

What is Echizen moat?

In the first place, Echizen moat was a common name that refers to the entrance that surrounds three sides of Matsudaira Echizen Moriyashiki, which was in the current area of Shinkawa 1-2 chome during the Edo period.
The moat has a width of about 20 to 30m, and it is surprising that it also served as a canal, such as loading small boats coming and going.

At one time, this moat, which supported the lives of daimyo throughout Edo City, was gradually reclaimed in the Meiji era....
The site of the mansion became the name of "Echizenbori", but after the war it was renamed the current "Shinkawa".
It is no exaggeration to say that Echizenbori Children's Park, which can be seen in the top photo, has become the only place to remember the era when the place name "Echizenbori" was used.

At present, the park is not a moat with the function of a canal, but a number of solid stones!
Parks of various sizes are scattered in Chuo-ku, each of which has different purposes, characteristics, and management forms.
However, a park surrounded by such a stone is rare.

Those who thought, "A park surrounded by stones is not uncommon," actually this stone is not just a stone ^^

The identity of the stone

The identity of the worrisome stone wall, which came out near the Kishibashi Bridge (Chiyoda-ku) over Nihonbashi River!
The construction of stone walls at Edo Castle and moats was a large project that was promoted with the cooperation of daimyo in various countries, and took a lot of money and effort.
The proof that such daimyo, kumito, masonry, etc. were involved in the business can be seen on the landmarks engraved on these stones.

One more!
As you can see on this information board, you can also see the stone wall of the revetment of Echizen moat in the park.
The excavation location and the cross section of the stone masonry of Echizen moat are also shown in an easy-to-understand manner, and although it is a children's park, adults can enjoy it.♫

The arrow hole tells the craftsmanship of the time, but I would like you to see it from the back.
Actually, I would like you to actually visit and see it, but since you are refraining from going out, I will introduce the back side as well!

That's right. By looking from the back side, you can better imagine the stone wall at that time while comparing it with the illustration of the masonry on the signboard.
The remnants of the town name "Echizenbori" are no longer here, but the remnants of the moat itself can actually be seen outside the park.♪

Machiseki camouflaged in the city

The place is near the intersection of Shinkawa 2-chome.
Did you know that there is a historic site called "Kenchiishi of Echizen moat" without knowing it?

The large stone embedded as if camouflage in this planting used to function as a root stone of the moat stone wall.

In this way, I love historical sites that remind me of the scenery of Edo at a sudden moment.
You can't tell unless you look closely, but you can see the traces of moats and rivers from the terrain and the slight slope on the street.
Even if it is a familiar landscape, there may be new discoveries in unexpected places.
When the current situation calms down, I would like to walk along the culvert again.
