What is "Edo City"?

This time, I would like to take a break from the story of "Nihonbashi Fish Market" and talk about "Edo City". Recently, historical drama has no longer been broadcast on TV, but I remember that there were expressions such as "(Edo) around the city, Gokumon" or "Rat kid who makes noise in Edo city". It is often heard in historical novels and historical dramas such as Shotaro Ikenami and Yasuhide Saeki, but in Edo-related books I read, I have rarely seen the expression "Edo City". Was this kind of wording used in the Edo period?

I got a book called "Edo Prefectural Picture Book Customs Traffic" (written by Kiichiro Kikuchi, Blue Frog Selection 9, published in August 1965), and introduced it because there was an explanation about "Edo City". This book is a reprint of what was published by Toyodo in December 1905. The author was born in the late Edo period after Tenpo, and introduces what he saw and heard himself in writing along with illustrations. At the time of writing, he was already over 70 years old, so he probably spent the first half of his life as a commoner of Edo.

Other than the outer ring, it is called the city, and the center of the city is Nihonbashi, several (1 = 109m) square from Nihonbashi, Ryogoku River in the east, outer moat in the west, Sujibashi in the north, Kanda River in the south, Shimbashi is called a downtown area, and ... is sung as a mountainside.

There is a mountain hand at the end of this place, but I can't understand it from the sense of modern people. Judging from the sense of the common people of Kiichiro Kikuchi, "Edo City" is a narrower part than the ink drawing inside the vermilion.
