KITAHARA COLLECTION Beckoning Cat
A wonderful collection of dolls and nostalgic toys is displayed near the first basement floor of Edgran in Kyobashi, the passageway that exits Tokyo Metro Kyobashi Station, and near the Chuo-ku Tourist Information Center. This is KITAHARA COLLECTION.
The exhibition is changed every season, and I am surprised at the large number of items and a wide variety of types, and I am always entertained.
This time, I would like to report on the beckoning cats that I often see on a daily basis.
The meaning of the hand mentioned as the birth of a beckoning cat
The birth of the beckoning cat was about 200 years ago in the Edo period. There are several theories about their origins, but it is difficult to identify them clearly. In the latter half of the 17th century, at Setagaya Gotoku-ji Temple, Naotaka Ii was invited by a white cat in front of the gate on the way home from falconry and escaped the difficulties of thunderstorms. Also, in the latter half of the 17th century, Yoshiwara's prostitute Tayu Usugumo was saved from a large snake by his cat, and instead the cat was killed as a substitute. Yeah.
The meaning of the hand raised by the beckoning cat is that it is different on the left and right. I remember it, and I forget it right away. Here, we will borrow the explanation posted as it is and report it.
*The right hand is a good luck. It is said that the left hand-lifting invites guests. If the arm you raised goes over your ears, you will bring a greater fortune. In addition, those with high hand positions invite distant fortunes, and those with low invite nearby fortunes. <Hereinafter, omitted>
Please go out and enjoy other wonderful collections.
