History of Edo unraveled with the taste of autumn "Sweet Potato"
~ Aoki Kunyo, Enao Kato, Echizennokami Ooka, Yoshimune Tokugawa, Ryotaku Maeno ~

Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
Suddenly, what do you want to eat in autumn?
Matsutake mushrooms, pears, sword fish, autumn salmon, chestnuts, sweet potatoes, etc., are unrivaled autumn tastes.
Among them, roasted potatoes may come to the top.
Therefore, we decided to use "sweet potatoes" with an interest-oriented theme and check if there was any relationship with Chuo-ku.

Although it seems to be a reckless challenge, the hint that he arrived immediately contrary to expectations was Koyo Aoki, a Confucian scholar and Dutch scholar in the middle of the Edo period called "Sweet Potato-sensei".
He was born as one of the sons of a fish wholesaler in Odawara-cho, Nihonbashi!
(Nihonbashi Odawara-cho is around the signboard of "Hakuya Matsuo Momo Aojuku Spring", which was introduced in the "Edo period to travel with Basho" in May, and is equivalent to the current Muromachi 1-chome.)

Next, looking for further relationships with Chuo-ku, the keyword "power" emerged.
When I was worried about it, Koya created the first opportunity to be called "Sweet Potato Teacher" with the help of magistrate's office Edomachi, who lived near Koya's tenement house.
He fell in love with Koya's excellent learning and personality, and recommended it to the magistrate Echizennokami Ooka to get it to an official.

(I wasn't aware of it until now, but the name of Enao Kato can also be found on the signboard.)

Later, Echizennokami Ooka was moved by Koya's `` Ban Potato Thinking '', a guide to sweet potatoes in the Kanto region, and Yoshimune Tokugawa, who was interested in the crop `` Sweet Potato '' that could be replaced by rice under the great famine of Kyoho. Report to
Be impressed by the book, Yoshimune ordered Koya to try sweet potatoes in Edo.
(Yoshimune is known for performing a water god festival (the predecessor of the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, "Ryogoku no Kawakai"), which prays for the eradication of the disease and the memorial service of the dead due to the Kyoho plague. )

(Echizennokami Ooka made a town fire extinguisher in 1718, and in 1720, organized that "Iroha 48 pairs"!)

I will omit it because it will be longer, but after many twists and turns, Koya's efforts have been fruitful, and sweet potato cultivation has spread to the Kanto region and nationwide with the support of Yoshimune.
If Koya didn't stay in the eyes of Esashino, he might not have been able to easily enjoy roasted potatoes today.

Looking back on the achievements of the characters so far, Koyo Aoki, Yoshimune Tokugawa, Echizennokami Ooka, and Enao Kato, you can see that all of them are very related to Chuo-ku.
However, the relationship with Chuo-ku does not end here!
Koya, who was also a Dutch scholar, was also a person who taught Dutch to Ryotaku Maeno, who translated the Demolition Shinsho together with Genpaku Sugita and Junnan Nakagawa.
The monument "Langaku Beginning Site Monument" related to "Dismantling Shinsho" is left in Akashicho.

And on the side of the monument of "Keio Gijuku Birthplace" next to it, the name of the doctor Ryotaku Maeno of the Nakatsu clan is also engraved.

By looking at Chuo-ku under the theme of "Sweet Potato", not only was I able to know the relationship between sweet potato teacher, Koyo Aoki and Chuo-ku, but also the points and points of history that have been featured in separate articles so far, I was able to make it a line, though part.
The scope of action tends to be limited under the influence of COVID-19 infection, but I hope we will continue to discover interesting things by unraveling the history of Chuo-ku from a surprising angle.♪
