I suddenly discovered a railway running under the sea 150 years ago!

I was surprised! A stone wall appeared from the ground under construction. This is Takanawa in the midst of redevelopment.
The stone wall in the photo was accidentally seen when walking through "Shinagawa's Haunted Guard" from Takanawa to Shibaura.

※Known as "Shinagawa's Haunted Guard" is famous for its low headlessness. The official name is Takanawa Bridge Bridge. As of October 2021, we will enter from near the site of Takanawa Okido.

In the Edo period, this area was certainly sea. Did you just build the coastline with stone walls? I thought at first.
However, if you look closely, stone walls are built on both sides like a dike.
Do you want to go to the sea? Is it really a dike? And what's it?

What I remember is that the railway between Shimbashi and Yokohama, which opened in the early Meiji era, was running in the sea around Takanawa.

If you look closely, this stone wall was the Takanawa embankment built in Tokyo Bay to lay the railroad tracks when the railway was first opened in Japan in 1872.
150 years ago, I built a levee in the sea and ran the railway! It's a great thing.

UNESCO's advisory body Icomos also notes that "(Takanawa embankment) is a very important heritage internationally."
