The island story of Chuo-ku: late Tokugawa shogunate, modern Ishikawajima

"Tokyo All Figures 1876 (1876)" (From Chuo-ku Kyobashi Library "Chuo-ku Historical Map Book [Tsukishima Hen]")

In the last time I wrote "Chuo-ku Island Story-Ishikawajima in the Edo Period", I didn't touch Ishikawajima in late Tokugawa shogunate.

Ishikawajima can be said to have already begun modern times at the end of the Tokugawa period.

This time, I would like to introduce Ishikawajima after late Tokugawa shogunate.

First of all, from the crowd.

In the postal Hochi Shimbun in 1875 (1875), it was reported that prisoners were also conducting reading and writing education at Ishikawajima prison. . (From Chuo Ward Kyobashi Library "Chuo-ku History Map Book [Tsukishima Hen]")

In 1895 (1895), it was relocated to Sugamo due to the need to establish modern prisons due to the aging of prisons.

It is the current location of Ikebukuro Sunshine 60.

Japan's first Western-style warship "Xuri Maru" (from Chuo-ku Kyobashi Library "Chuo-ku History Book [Tsukishima Hen]")

I'll go back to late Tokugawa shogunate.

In 1853 (1853), when Perry arrived in Uraga, the Shogunate decided Ishikawajima as a shipyard site and ordered the Mito Domain to establish and operate it. The Mito clan built a shipyard for the construction of large ships, led by feudal lord and Nariaki Tokugawa, and held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Western-style wooden warship, the Xuri Maru, the following year.

Here, Japan's modern shipbuilding industry started.

“Ishikawashima Shipyard Figure” 1901 (1901) (From the Chuo Ward Kyobashi Library “13th special exhibition Tsukishima Hundred Views” of the Chuo Ward Folk Tenmonkan)

At the time of the Meiji Restoration, the Ishikawajima Shipyard was under the jurisdiction of the new government from the Shogunate to repair ships and manufacture small ships and equipment. The Yokosuka Shipyard was completed in May 1872 (1872), the ship business was relocated, and the Ishikawajima Shipyard was closed.
In October 1876 (1876), Toji Hirano, who owned the printing business in Tsukiji, leased the Ishikawajima Shipyard after the closure and took over the shipyard, took over the shipyard of the first private West ship in Japan. Established Ishikawajima Hirano Shipyard, the first private West shipyard in Japan.

In 1889, Eiichi Shibusawa, Saga Nabeshima Family and Uwajima Date clan became a company organization.

Furthermore, in 1911 (1911), he signed an agreement with Shibaura Works to manufacture not only shipbuilding but also construction machinery, railway passenger vehicles, and construction of large bridges, and became a comprehensive equipment manufacturer.

There is also a large building built by the company in Chuo-ku. It is Kachidokibashi, a jumping movable bridge completed in 1940 (1940). Kachidokibashi, which was said to be the best movable bridge in the Toyo, has dramatically improved traffic in the Tsukishima area and greatly contributed to industrial development.

Ishikawajima Museum

Ishikawajima Museum on the island of Chuo-ku: late Tokugawa shogunate, modern Ishikawajima

After the war, the company name was changed to Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries, Ltd., and this area produced advanced products in various industrial fields, including shipbuilding.
Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries, Ltd. (currently IHI) closed the Tsukuda Plant in 1979.

In River City 21, which stands on the site, there is the Ishikawajima Museum. At the museum, you can see valuable photographs and materials that convey the products and technologies of IHI along with the history and culture of Ishikawajima and Tsukuda Island. I am surprised that it has created many things that are the first in Japan and the first in the world.
