The beautiful appearance of Jobanbashi has been revived.
Tokiwa Hashikado was just across the Nihonbashi River, which flows through the border between Chuo-ku and Chiyoda-ku, just across Sotobori-dori St. from the Bank of Japan head office. According to "Chuo-ku Monoshiri Encyclopedia", the Masugata Gate was built during the Edo period to protect Edo Castle, and was an important outer gate leading to Ote-mon gate in front of Edo Castle. The gate was removed in 1873, but the remaining stone wall is the site of Tokiwa Hashikado, a nationally designated historic site. It was the Shibusawa Aobuchi Memorial Association (currently the Eiichi Shibusawa Memorial Foundation), which was instrumental in preserving it, and a bronze statue of Eiichi Shibusawa stands in the open Tokiwa Bridge Park. (Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku)
In front of the gate, there is Joban Bridge, a stone arch bridge that was replaced by a wooden bridge using the stone wall of Koishikawa Gate in 1877. It is a precious stone bridge that remains in Tokyo and is the capital of Designated Cultural Property.
"Joban" It is said that the statement of "ban" instead of "board" means that the plate is fragile and made it a stone with good luck.
It was damaged and restored by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, but the restoration work was completed and traffic will be possible around mid-April.
It's an elegant bridge that you can imagine that a palanquin with a general is heading to Edo Castle.
Another Tokiwa Bridge
A little south of that, there is Tokiwa Bridge, an earthquake reconstruction bridge built in 1926. It is a reinforced concrete arch bridge and a wide road bridge. The nearby intersection is also the Jobanbashi intersection.
On Edo-dori St. in the north, there is also the Shin Tokiwa Bridge, which was built to pass the streetcar during the Taisho era, and how about a spring walk along the Nihonbashi River while watching the three Tokiwabashis.
