Around the Transforming Nihonbashi area

A redevelopment project (Nihonbashi 1-chome Middle District Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project) is planned around the Nihonbashi Nomura Building (Nomura Securities Head Office), which is adjacent to Nihonbashi. The old building of Nomura Building (the building near Nihonbashi) is subject to preservation (outer walls, etc.), but except for the choledo Nihonbashi and Nittetsu Nihonbashi buildings, all of these plots are subject to redevelopment.

From the Showa-dori side, you can see that the redevelopment area is quite large. The existing buildings in the target area will be equipped with curing outer walls for demolition, giving the sense that the city will change in the future, and at the same time, it will stir the imagination of what new city will be.

Buildings have already been dismantled in some parts of the district. According to the business operator, Nihonbashi 1-chome Middle District Urban Redevelopment Association, new construction will begin in September this year and is scheduled to be completed four years later in December 2025. Since the underground construction project of the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway Nihonbashi section is scheduled to open in 2040, "new towns" will appear early.

The attached figure was obtained at a briefing on the redevelopment project (a blog has been approved by the redevelopment association). According to this, high-rise buildings with a height of 52 floors above ground and a height of 284m will rise in the area. The area was behind Nihonbashi Cored, and there were few shops (although there was "Taimeiken"), but it was a rather plain place. It will be transformed into something with a strong presence at once.

Nihonbashi has been a lively place since Edo, and has been changing with the development of the city. This redevelopment project will attract more and more people in Nihonbashi. However, there is only one disappointing thing. I was expecting the Nihonbashi River to sparkle in the dazzling sunshine due to the underground construction of the capital city, but with the appearance of this skyscraper on the south side of the Nihonbashi River, the expectation has been halved. But that's also the trend of the times.
