To learn more about Zuiken Kawamura
Do you know Zuiken Kawamura (1618-1699), one of the historical figures closely related to Chuo-ku?
In Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, there are "Zuiken Kawamura Yashiki Ruins" and "Shinkawa Ruins", etc., and his achievements are also explained in the text of the Chuo-ku Tourism Certification "Chuo-ku Monoshiri Encyclopedia".
Since I started interested in Chuo-ku, I have been interested in who did what, especially in the early Edo period. This time, I read Jun Ito's "The Man Who Builded Edo" (Asahi Shimbun Publishing, 2016.9). Zuiken Kawamura is listed as its main achievements, such as the opening of the eastbound and westbound routes, and the flood control of the Yodogawa River, but in fact, he lived a turbulent life, and with many sadness and many efforts for the world I understood in this book that he was a merchant who did it.
The time is too slow because he draws his life in one book. I can't read without tears, such as the shogunate clan system in the 1600s, his sadness and achievements in the great fire of the Meiryaku era (furisode fire) in 1657, exchanges with Arai Shiraishi, and activities up to the later years.
If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.
