Do you know "Monthly Nihonbashi", which has been popular in Nihonbashi for 39 years?

I'm one of the big fans who always stop by the store where "Monthly Nihonbashi" is distributed every month and make it a favorite book.

With the June issue at Mie Terrace, read the article on "Okawabata no Mizurenjo", and from the special feature on swimming in Okawa (Sumida River), which was crowded from the Meiji era to the Taisho era, Shogen Mukai 6th Masato (Masakado) I will introduce the founder Mukai style.

The Mukai-ryu, which is said to be the founder of the sixth generation Masakazu (Masakado), is a swimming style that has been passed down from generation to generation to Mifunete magistrate who served the Shogunate, and the sixth generation is known as a master of swimming.

Shogen Bansho is located in Hatchobori, Reigishima Island, and a Funategumi mansion was set up on the east side to play a role in protecting Edo Castle. The Mukai style is a swimming style as a martial art. It was handed down by Ryosuke Sasazuka, who was the Aizu clansman who followed the flow of the Mukai style at the end of the Tokugawa period.

Swimming seems to be inferior in speed because it always swims in front of the enemy, but it is a swimming method that originated in Nihonbashi.

In 1871, Katsuyo Sasanuma, who draws on the flow of the Mukai style, opened the Sumida River Modern Swimming Pool.

July 21, 1894 "Yomiuri Shimbun" article-There were 670 students Katsuyo Sasanuma, and students from Tokyo Normal School also accepted.

In 1878, Masaie Suzuki opened a water refinery on the banks of Ataka River on the opposite bank of Hamacho.

July 27, 1901 "Tokyo Asahi Shimbun" Article-Matayoshi Suzuki and Matakichi Ito opened a water refinery on the banks of Hamacho.

Katsumi Miyake

He was a watercolor painter born in the house of the Anami Hachizuka family retainer in Tokushima Prefecture, and lived in the Nagaya of the Hachizuka family's main residence at 1-chome Hamacho when he was six.

I am two years younger than Toson Shimazaki 1872-1943, and I know Fujimura in Shinshu Komoro. Fujimura went to Yasuaki Elementary School and lived in Ginza, now Shiga, moved to Hamacho when he was 14 years old, and seems to have become familiar with Nagata running water swimming. It seems that the lumps of garbage floating in the description in "Ohanamonogatari", the skin of watermelons, the carcasses of floating cats, and the boards flowed well along the swim side of Fujimura.

The Sumida River at that time was not a clear stream, but it was said that he was happily engaged in swimming.

Miyake, who went to the Mukai-style swimming pool, described in "I can't remember it," saying, "Okawa, who was wondering when he could swim to the other riverbank, was able to swim comfortably." At one point, a long-distance swimming party was held to Odaiba in Shinagawa, and I still swim from Hashimoto Ryogoku to Eitai Bridge." One day, when I returned home, I felt terrible diarrhea and nausea and went to a Chinese medicine physician, and he healed, but when I saw the muddy water of the Sumida River, I felt like my stomach hurt, but after a week, I wanted to swim again. "

Yoshitoshi Mori

A Kaiwa print painter who spent his life in Nihonbashi in Hashimoto Funamachi (Nihonbashimuromachi 1-chome)

He draws the features and people of downtown with unique techniques and has won the Barcelona International Print Exhibition.

For two years of elementary school 5.6 years, at the Mukai-ryu water refinery near Ryogoku Bridge, "Imlusion Tokyo", "I enter from the entrance, take off my kimono, and enter the river as soon as I go down a small stone step. I have. There were ships floating in some places on the river, and there was a pool-like enclosure connected by thin logs. It is said that this square area was used up to about one-third of the width of Okawa. Beginners grabbed and practiced here, and when they improved, they came out of the enclosure and swam in the main stream."

A literary writer born in Chuo-ku, a school different from the Mukai style.
