[Excursion Series No. 31] Restored Harumi High-Rise Apartment (Part 2)
~ groundbreaking! What is a design for the future?

Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
This is the last article of the restoration / Harumi high-rise apartment that has been told three times.
I would like to focus on the mega-structuring method with three-story and six dwelling units as one unit, and the accessories that I noticed during the tour.

Mega-structuring method

In the first place, the mega-structuring method is to reduce the number of long piles required for landfills, reduce the amount of steel frames and joints, and reduce the area of common corridors in order to respond to the biggest design challenge of reducing construction costs. A frame method adopted to reduce
It is said that there was a concept of an apartment house that could respond to social changes by dividing the structural frame, which is expected to have a long life in society, and dividing the vessel of individual life that changes with the times.

The photo on the right below shows a model that removes the walls of each dwelling unit and shows the state where the six dwelling units are united (upper and lower rows).

Inside the mega structure, there were pillars, beams, and floors as secondary components that make up each dwelling unit, and the walls between dwelling units were concrete blocks to make it easy to remove.
This block can also be found in the restored apartment.

Based on these considerations, the design was designed with the possibility of expanding the size of dwelling units in the future.
In fact, it was demolished in less than 40 years old due to redevelopment, but here is a photo of trying to make six dwelling units one before dismantling.

Although it was not realized, it seems that it was also considering its use as a dance hall or movie theater in response to social changes.
Due to the high ceiling, it is perfect for a Western-style dance hall or a movie theater with a large screen.

How would it be used if Harumi High-rise apartments, which had been designed not only based on standards but also variable future designs, remained after that?

Small items installed in dwelling units

Finally, I would like to briefly introduce the small items installed in the dwelling unit that I care about while visiting the restored Harumi High-rise apartment.
First of all, a bathtub. Even though it is a high-rise apartment with an elevator installed, the bathtub is still wooden and Japanese style.

There was a guide with notes on it.

The chronological order changes, but before visiting the History Museum, a video for residents of Hibarigaoka housing complex, produced by the Japan Housing Corporation (currently the Urban Renaissance Agency) about 60 years ago, "Invitation to the housing complex" for residents of Hibarigaoka housing complex I watched.
In the video, newlyweds planning to move to the housing complex appeared, and it was easy to understand what kind of place the housing complex is and what to pay attention to when living.
Of course, there was also an explanation on how to use the bath.
As with stoves, when using gas, it is essential to open windows and ventilation openings so that you do not feel sick due to gas poisoning!

And even if you look at the small items in the dwelling units and elevators, there are many familiar manufacturers names.

Thanks to the easy-to-understand explanations and the exhibition method where you can feel the remnants of the time, I was able to enjoy it enough even without expertise in architecture.
If you are worried about the whole picture of life in the Harumi High-rise apartment, want to learn about the changing history of Harumi every day, why not visit the current history museum in Harumi and Hachioji?

And it will be closed on March 31, 2022 next year.
After a year of transition, it is adjacent to the former Akabanedai housing complex point-type residential building (star house), which became the first registered Tangible Cultural Property (building) in Akabanedai housing complex in Akabadai, Kita-ku in spring 2023, and is scheduled to open as a new information dissemination facility.

However, since the number of visitors is expected to increase, it is unclear whether it will be possible to enter each dwelling unit as it is now after the relocation.
If you want to be sure to enter the dwelling unit and see it up close, we recommend visiting a facility in Hachioji!
