The start is Nihonbashi
"Oh. Is this Nihonbashi?
It's a very high place."
"Nihonbashi" A traveler from overseas who speaks while looking up at the highway with the bridge nameplate of the bridge.
"No, no. It's an expressway, and Nabashi Nihonbashi is underneath it."
This is an iron plate material from a veteran guide who guides you to Nihonbashi.
The starting point of the highway
Nihonbashi was built in Keicho 8 (1603).
It was the year when Ieyasu Tokugawa became the conquering general and opened the Shogunate in Edo.
The following year, including the construction of the milestone in 1604, the five highways including the Tokaido Highway were fully developed, and Nihonbashi was designated as the starting point.
Nihonbashi has been the starting point of the national highway since the Meiji era.
In 1911, the "Tokyo City Road Mark" was built in line with the completion of the current two-story stone arch bridge.
At present, a plate of "Japan Road Mark" is embedded in the center of the bridge.
A replica is installed in the "Otoshi Square" on the west side of Kitazume Bridge.
A bridge of travel
If you are looking at Nihonbashi for the first time, what kind of image do you have in Japan?
The first Nihonbashi that customers who get off at Haneda Airport International Terminal (Handa Airport in Ota-ku) from overseas will see is "Haneda Nihonbashi".
In the airport, the bridge of 1603 was restored in about half the size.
It is hoped that it will be a bridge for a journey that will fly to the world.
On the wall of the international terminal, the famous places of Edo town drawn on the "Edo Figure Screen" are decorated with vivid ceramic wall paintings.
Of course, the Nihonbashi area with a large arc is also depicted.
People who come and go along the bridge. High billboard. Fish banks. A line of big shops.
What a lively Edo town.
The bustle of Edo
When restoring "Haneda Nihonbashi", the restoration of "Edo Tokyo Museum" (Yokoami, Sumida-ku) was helpful in restoring Nihonbashi.
The museum's permanent gallery space entrance is on the 6th floor of the building, and the first place you will encounter is Nihonbashi, which has a magnificent view.
Of the total length of 28 spaces (approximately 51m) width of 4 spaces and 2 feet (approximately 8m), the northern half has been restored.
Using cypress as the material, giboshi faithfully shaped the real thing of the early Edo period.
Even those who think the museum is a tough place can feel at once with the feeling of slipping back in time to Edo.
The streets of Edo are introduced in a diorama.
Well, the expressions of each person are alive and lively, and even the story of the background seems to emerge.
It's an exhibition that you won't get tired of seeing until any time.
Calligraphy of Yoshinobu
Well, the bridge nameplate called Nihonbashi. The fact that it was written by the 15th Shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa is a trivia known to those who know it.
Nihonbashi at the knee of Edo Castle. Deep connection with successive generals.
Yukio Ozaki, the mayor of Tokyo at the time, asked for writing, but it is said that there was a strong support from the people around Nihonbashi.
Yoshinobu closed the life of the turbulence in 1913.
That means that at the time of its establishment in 1911, it definitely crossed the bridge.
Mr. Kusanagi's position
※ Photography spots located in Nishigahara, Kita-ku (in Asukayama Park)
It was Tsuyoshi Kusanagi who played Yoshinobu Tokugawa in 2021 Taiga drama series's "Watch the Blue Sky".
I had only the image of SMAP, but I was surprised and impressed by the appearance and each of the works.
It might have been such a person.
He became a general at a major turning point in the times, curtained the world of Tokugawa, and thoroughly followed the attitude of Kyojun in the whirlpool of Boshin war.
The start is Nihonbashi
My blog name is "Koedo Itabashi".
When I decided on a name 13 years ago, I wanted to hang it on "Edo Nihonbashi".
But what was the name of Honmaru at once, I stopped at an inn in Itabashi in front of Nakasendo.
Well, this year, I will continue to enjoy my activities with the spirit of aiming for Nihonbashi in Hana.
