Walking around Tsukiji Ohashi Bridge

Hello, this is the new correspondent "Take-chan". This is my second blog post.

Tsukiji Ohashi is a bridge connecting "Kachidoki" and "Tsukiji". This new bridge, built at the bottom of the Sumida River, opened on November 4, 2018. The bridge has an impressive silhouette with the arch sloped outside.

The Toranomon Tsukiji Tunnel (Ring Route 2), which is currently under construction on the Tsukiji side of this bridge, will be opened at the end of FY2022 (planned), and if the full-scale operation of Tokyo BRT is realized, access from the bay area to Shimbashi and Toranomon will be greatly improved.

If you actually walk across this bridge, you can feel that Kachidoki and Shiodome have become within walking distance.

By the way, this time, we will introduce "Take-chan" original walking course (approximately 2.2 km in total) that goes around this bridge.

The starting point is Hamarikyu Garden, which was reopened on March 22. ※About a 5-minute walk from Tsukiji Market Station

Well, let's start walking.

Historic remain

First of all, let's cross the Shiosaki Bridge intersection with Ote-mon gate Bridge in Hamarikyu.

Proceed about 100 meters along the gently curved coastal street to the left, and an old railroad crossing alarm stands on the sidewalk next to the Ginza Post Office. The sign says "the only railroad crossing signal left in Ginza", and the Chuo-ku Monoshiri Encyclopedia reads "Japanese National Railways railroad crossing alarm". From 1931 to 1987, there was a railroad crossing of a freight line connecting Shiodome (Shiodome Station) and Tsukiji Market (Tokyo Ichiba Station).

Turn right at this railroad crossing. Crossing the "Shin-Owari Bridge" and walking along the gentle curve path unique to the abandoned line trace, you will reach Shin-ohashi-dori St. When you cross the "Old Fruit and Vegetable Monzen Intersection" in front of you, you will enter the dedicated sidewalk upstream of Tsukiji Ohashi. Let's slowly climb the dedicated sidewalk that winds sideways at the Toranomon Tsukiji Tunnel (Ring Route 2), which is under construction.

If you look at the upstream side, you can see the Tokyo Sky Tree in the distance, the vast site of Tsukiji Market, Kachidokibashi, and the tower apartment on Tsukuda Island in front of you.

Yeah, good scenery!

I met the pleasure boat "Emeraldas" just passed through Kachidokibashi.

The base of the Kachidoki side is "Tsukiji Ohashi Hashizume Square". I like to go down the stairs and take a glimpse of the Sumida River from the landing, but I can also get off by elevator from the sidewalk to the ground.

It's a barrier-free bridge that is friendly to people.

Twilight is recommended (downstream sidewalk)

Go around the sidewalk downstream of Tsukiji Ohashi and aim for Hamarikyu again.

On the downstream side, you can see the mouth of the Sumida River, Hamarikyu Garden, Takeshiba Pier, etc. Currently, the Toranomon Tsukiji Tunnel is under construction, so it is directly connected to a temporary road on the Tsukiji River from Tsukiji Ohashi, so you can walk nonstop along the Tsukiji River to Hamarikyu.

If you cross this bridge at sunset, you may be able to encounter the most romantic sunset.

An oasis in the city

The temporary road on the Tsukiji River is not currently accessible. Because it is exclusively for bicycles and pedestrians, the area is very quiet.

Hamarikyu is home to various birds such as black-faced bunting, Onaga, common kingfisher, Japanese white-eye, brown-eared bulbul, dragonflies and crows, so if you listen carefully, you may be able to enjoy the sounds of birds.

A promenade where you can feel nature so close in the city center is rare.

Finally goal-in

When you can see the Otemon Bridge built about 100 years ago, walking about 2.2 km is finally finished!

Thank you very much.
