[The 40th Excursion Series] The Smuggling of Yoshida Shoin
Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
Every time I study the Chuo-ku Tourism Test, I remember important events in the life of Yoshida Shoin, and I have always been concerned about it.
That is, when the Black Ship Fleet reappeared in Kaei 7 (1854), Shoin attempted to smuggle it but failed.
I wanted to know more about what the smuggling plan was like and why it failed, but I've been putting it off until now.
However, when I visited Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture the other day, I happened to have a nearby historical site, so I was able to know the fact at once.
So this time, I would like to focus on his smuggling plan and the subsequent Yoshida Shoin-related historical sites in Shimoda city and Chuo-ku!
First, go to Bentenjima in Kakizaki, Shimoda City, where the smuggling was set in chronological order.
Inside Bentenjima Park, which protrudes into Shimoda Bay, there is a signboard (pictured below) for "Yoshida Shoin Shigesuke Kaneko, the trace of the Tokai planned" (pictured below) and a bronze statue of two people entitled "Morning of Tokai" (pictured above).

Going back to Kaei 6 (1853). Shoin decided to commit a ban on isolation and smuggling to learn about overseas circumstances.
He was encouraged to take a flight to a Russian ship led by Putchartin, who arrived in Nagasaki from Shozan Sakuma, and rushed to the site, but returned to Edo.
Still, Shoin, who could not give up on smuggling, came to Shimoda with his disciple Jusuke Kaneko following the Perry fleet, which revoked in March of the following year.
It is said that he hid himself in the shrine of Kakizaki Bentenjima and asked for an opportunity to smuggle.

Then, in the middle of the night, he rowed a small boat from the beach of Bentenjima, squeezed the Pohatan on which Perry boarded, and asked for a trip to the United States.
At the time of this visit, it was Shimoda Bay, which was calm and connected to the open sea where a bright future was likely to be waiting, but the night they desperately rowed a small boat was killed in the two senses of rough seas and prohibition of isolation. Isn't it?
However, it is very impressive to think that they were also seeing the same scenery at that time.

Well, it was Shoin who finally had a chance, but since the United States and Japan have just signed a treaty, Perry refuses their visit to the United States.
In such disappointment, the two turned back and landed about 1 km south of the place where the boat was rowed.
There is a monument to the landing of Yoshida Shoin, which contains the contents and results of their plans.

In this way, Shoin and others whose smuggling failed are clean and selfish.
He was now detained at Ho Hikaru, the director of the Shimoda Municipal Central Community Center.

After that, he was moved to Hiraname's prison, and on April 11 of the same year, he was sent to the prison in Kodemmacho, Edo.
Shoin and others stayed in Shimoda for a short period of 24 days, and the plan did not go as expected, but without that action, the opening of the late Tokugawa shogunate port could not be talked about, and it was said that it had a great impact on future generations.
Jisshi Park (Temmacho prison site, taken in April 2022)
The Temmacho prison, where Shoin was housed twice, is now located in the area of Jisshi Park, Jushi Square, Daianrakuji Temple, and Minobu Betsuin, and until Meiji 8 (1875), which was abolished by the completion of Ichigaya Prison. Was working.
It was the largest prison in the Shogunate with a capacity of 350 to 700, and the prison was classified according to gender, identity, and type of crime.

On the wall of Daianrakuji Temple on the opposite side, there is a monument of "Edo Temmacho Execution Site", and on the sign of Daianrakuji Temple Engi, it was sent to this area in Ansei's prison, and was sent to this area in 1859. It also mentions Shoin that was sentenced to death and executed.
And in Jisshi Park, there is a monument engraved with the monument of "Yoshida Shoin end of the end of the end of the day" and the phrase of his resignation, "The body is kept in Nobe of Hisato Hi Musashi even if it does not decay" .
Shoin was executed at the young age of 30.
For him who bravely lived in the era of rejection of the king, I think it was regrettable that he could not see the future of Japan after that.
What would have happened to Japan if he had lived after that?
When you visit Nihonbashikodenmacho, why don't you think about the life of Shoin and take a historical walk?
Aside
At the breakfast of the pension we stayed in Shimoda City, we had Ginza Café Paulista's "forest coffee" without pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Since I met the president of Ginza Café Paulista, the freshly ground coffee brewed with the courtesy of my husband, who has served this coffee to guests, has been exceptional.
I was able to talk about Cafe Paulista Ginza store and Shinkawa's factory direct sales shop, and it was a surprising development that it would lead to Chuo-ku in such a place!
