The nostalgia "Shellman Artworks" guided by the sound of the phonograph

It's a new correspondent moss.

When I was walking along Kiboricho Street in Ginza, I saw a small shop with a phonograph mark next to the Ginza 3-chome Post Office.

A small store that looks like a gallery at first glance. It was not a type of shop that usually step in easily, but when I jumped in, a wonderful world was spreading.

An unusual "SP record" is a slurry

The rare "SP record" is a nostalgia "Shelman Artworks" led by the sound of a sloppy phonograph.

Here "Shelman Artworks" is a specialty store of phonographs and SP records.

A record of a standard called "SP" is lined up on the 1st floor. What you envision in the word "record" is generally called "LP (Long Playing Record)" and is a standard that has been popular since around 1950. With the spread of LP, earlier standards have come to be called "SP (Standard Playing Record)".

SP is characterized by the fact that it is made of harder material than LP. Also, since it is necessary to set the rotation speed at the time of performance faster than LP, there are some things that cannot be played by record players like currently on sale.

Because of the records of the old era, the lineup of songs is mainly classical and jazz. Among them, we also have works of high historical value, such as those recorded by Rafmaninov, who is also famous as a composer.

Originally, it was said that records were added as an extra bonus for phonographs, but as he responded to the request for more record variations, he said that it became one of the world's best collections. The theme of the serial TV novel "Ale" broadcast on NHK in 2020 was the history of music in the Taisho era and Showa eras, but we also provided records from our store in response to the desire to use music that matched the times.

The phonograph is impressive in both appearance and sound!

When you go up to the 2nd floor, the first thing that jumps into your eyes is a huge trumpet.

Like other instruments, the larger the trumpet part, the lower the sound can be expressed in a wider range.

This was created by a company founded by Edison, who invented the phonograph. At first glance, it seems that there is no place to place records, but in fact, the black one at the base of the trumpet is the record.

The original record was cylindrical, and it was recorded with a spiral sound engraved on this cylinder. However, due to the ease of storage, disk-shaped ones that are still familiar with have become mainstream.

Many "box-shaped" items, which are more luxurious and have strengthened their character as interiors and crafts, have also been produced.

The so-called "trumpet" part was stored inside the box, and when I did not use the phonograph, I closed the door in front and enjoyed it as a furnishing. Before the war, it seemed that the price of about one year's salary was commonplace to buy one.

Thanks to the shop, I listened to a box-type phonograph.

By turning the handle attached next to the box without using electricity, the power is stored in the spring. When playing music, the sound will be distorted unless the record rotates at a constant speed. The technology to control this well is required for phonographs.

The faint sound of "sir" at the moment you put a needle on the record, followed by a piano that can be played, and the melody of the trumpet resonate throughout the body. Although there is a somewhat cozy atmosphere unique to the music of the old era, I still heard the sound of each sound more clearly than I had imagined, and I felt a comfortable balance of strength and softness.

Before I was born, and it was a foreign music, but for some reason I felt nostalgic and my eyes were moisturized.

"Shelman Artworks" seems to be holding events where you can experience the phonograph, such as a mini-concert of a phonograph, so if you have the opportunity, please try this tone.
