The Chuo-ohashi Bridge was completed in 1993. This bridge spans the Sumida River and connects Shinkawa, Chuo-ku and Tsukuda, Chuo-ku. A part of Tsukuda Island (currently Tsukuda 2-chome) was originally an island with a development of a delta, and was originally called Armor Island. It became known as Ishikawajima because it became the territory of Hachizaemon Ishikawa, the boatman of Edo shogunate in the early Edo period. The main tower, inspired by the helmet hoe shape, seems to have been designed after the former Armor Island.
