50 years after his death "Kiyokata Kaburagi" exhibition beauty paintings related to Chuo-ku
The "50 Years After Death Kiyokata Kaburagi Exhibition" will be held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo until May 8th. The other day, I went to see it. Kiyokata is famous for beautiful paintings, but is a painter who is very closely related to Chuo-ku. Born in Kanda, he lived in Kibiki-cho from 7 to 17 years old and 23 to 28 years old, and Hamacho for 6 years from the age of 28, and his work depicts the town where Kiyokata lived, Tokyo in the Meiji era and customs. I am.
The beauty painting trilogy, which combines the phantom beauty paintings "Tsukiji Akashicho", "Shintomicho" and "Hamacho Riverside", which were missing for 44 years and discovered in 2018, is the first time in three years since 2019. . This is also a must-see.
It is a very large picture with a height of 174 x a width of 74 cm, but the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and other parts of the face, hair, kimonos and accessories, and the background are carefully drawn in detail and very carefully, so even if you look at it all the time I will not get tired.
※"Tsukiji Akashicho" and trilogy are introduced in detail on yaz's blog and will be helpful.

Based on the flow of the Kuniyoshi Utagawa "Genji Store School"
The ukiyo-e artist of Edo "Kuniyoshi Utagawa" is also a person related to Chuo-ku. Known as "Kuniyoshi of Warriors", including the huge skeleton "Soma's Kouchi Ura", which appears from the dark, he left many humorous and bold and unusual works. He is still one of the popular ukiyo-e artists along with Hokusai and Hiroshige.
Kuniyoshi was born in Nihonbashi and lived in a Genji store in today's Ningyocho, so Kuniyoshi's family was called the "Genji Store School". One of the Genji Store Schools and Kuniyoshi's disciples include Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, who was called the "last Ukiyo-e artist." His disciple is Toshikata Mizuno.
Kiyokata Kaburagi was a disciple of Toshikata Mizuno when he was 13 years old. I can't imagine that Kiyokata Kaburagi, a master of beauty painting, is following the flow of Ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa, but from Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, Toshikata Mizuno, and Kiyokata Kaburagi, the Genealogy of "Genji Store School" continues.
Ukiyo-e declined in the Meiji era, but Kuniyoshi's "Genji Store School" style and tradition have been passed down to the Meiji, Taisho eras, and today as Japanese painting Western paintings.
