The news of the Josephine bell and the two bells of Jeanne Louise in Edo

I went to visit the Catholic Sekiguchi Church, the Cathedral of St. Mary, Tokyo.

When I saw the cathedral building designed by Kenzo Tange for the first time in three years from inside, I felt the strictness of God in the light that came in.

And I also visited the Josephine Bell, which is installed in the garden. The following is written on the monument.

In 1877, shortly after the ban on Christianity, a cathedral was completed in Tsukiji, and two bells were carried from France across the sea. One of them is this bell. Donated by Gustave Boansonard, the father of modernization in Japan, and lady Ann Riet, and was named "Adlade Josephine".

The two bells played a duo at the Tsukiji Church, but Josephine was moved to Sekiguchi Church along with the relocation of Tokyo G.C. in 1920.

It is likely to be offered as a metal during World War II, but it is said that it was escaped by an offer from the Meiji Constitution Memorial Hall. Since then, he has told the time to overcome the war, but ended his role with the dedication of the current cathedral in 1964. Another bell, Jeanne Louise in Edo, is also kept at Tsukiji Church.

According to the "Chuo-ku Monoshiri Encyclopedia" that can be seen on foot.

Built in Tsukiji Foreign Settlement in 1874 as the second Christian church after Nagasaki and Yokohama, the cathedral was built in 1878, but was built in the Greek temple Parthenon style in 1927 (1927) after being destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake. The design was in charge of Father Jirodias and Onjiro Ishikawa's evangelist.

It is a wooden building with mortar painted on the wall, with six doria-type pillars lined up in front, and roses and tulip sculptures on the gable wall in front of the roof.

Inside the cathedral is a church with a central ceiling set higher than the surrounding corridor, and there is a copper bell (Kumin Tangible Cultural Property), which was cast in France in 1876. (Exhibited under the eaves as of the end of June 2022)

Please come and visit the cathedral to see the actual thing.

I think it's fun to walk along Reservoir Street and visit the monument of the U.S. Embassy in St. Luke's College of Nursing, the ruins of Tsukiji foreign settlements, and the monument of the birthplace of the so-called Mission School.

Enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant in St. Luke's Tower and the dining room in Tsukiji.
