Kawayanagi "Kayabacho with round parasols"-"Kayabacho umbrella"

The umbrella of Edo was called "downhill umbrella", and the prototype was "Daikoku umbrella" built by Oguroya in Osaka. In the vicinity of Kayabacho, Kawayanagi, which came to be made in Edo, there is a phrase called "Kayabacho, lined with round parasols." There were many shops selling umbrellas and clogs, "Terifuricho is the whole area of Kofunecho. In the rakugo "Shinzo Hairyu", there is a scene where it was raining and bought clogs and umbrellas in Terumachi and changed clothes. There are many shops dealing with clogs and snow clogs in Terumachi, and it is said that clogs and umbrellas were sold if it rained and snow clogs were sold. It's a town where business prospers even if it shines or falls, so it's named like this.

It is often seen that ronins are mending umbrellas in historical drama, but umbrellas are expensive at the current amount of 5,000 yen to 7,000 yen and parasols 20,000 yen or more, and repairs may have become a little more life.

It is said that umbrellas became popular because kimono merchant Echigo-ya handled "rental umbrellas" with a large name and number for advertising. This is the origin of the 'Ban umbrella'. It is said that the largest number of umbrellas is 1,500, but it is said that they did not actually make 1,500. He said 1,500 with a hora to solidify Blanding. The effect of Blanding is rape, and you can see Kawayanagi as follows.

Kawayanagi says, "Edonaka is an Echigo-ya and a rainbow is blown."

The attached photo is a photo that informs the current Mitsukoshi actually went around 2015 about the "rental umbrella" system and an imitation of "ban umbrella" made by Echigoya.

"It's a shower to know the funny's hanjo,"

"They don't sell them for rent,"

"The old umbrella always has two or three Echigo,"

Umbrellas were initially manufactured in Kyoto and Osaka, and in Edo, only stores sold as dropouts. However, "Kayabacho Umbrellas" is listed as a specialty of Edo in "Continuing Edo Sunako" (published in 1735). Kayabacho seemed to be home to many umbrella craftsmen, and this local umbrella shop was behind Ruriko Yakushi in Kayabacho, and it was very crowded in worshiper when Yakushi fair (8th and 12th). It seems that the worshipers ordered an umbrella on the 8th, left a deposit, and returned home on the 12th. It would have been a common custom for Edo citizens so that it became the subject of Kawayanagi.

"The umbrella is the twelfth of the eight days,"

At the lower right of the attached picture of "Picture Book Edo Souvenir", the eaves of a ground umbrella shop are shown and the state of umbrella production is introduced. There are several umbrellas that may be waiting for customers to come after the order has been received.

Since the reform of Tempo (1841-1843), actor Ukiyo-e has issued an order to suspend publication. So, trying to publish it somehow, the painters and publishers devised, and this picture was "not Ukiyo-e." I'm publishing "graffiti" that claims to be graffiti. A communal umbrella is written in this graffiti, so it is probable that a considerable amount of umbrellas were popular at this time. It's the only place where men and women of complimentary umbrellas were being carried out.
