Introduction of Komin Kawamoto, the first beer brewery in Japan at Kayabacho 1-chome

According to Komin Kawamoto's "The Dutch scholar Komin Kawamoto" (Komin Kawamoto), Komin Kawamoto is famous as a universal scientist who opened the door to modern times. Komin Kawamoto, who encountered so many fires that he joked when he built a new house, moved to Hatchobori Daikan-yashiki in 1846. It is said that the Kawamoto family has relocated more than a dozen times, including temporary housing. I will explain the place where my home was later, but this house was Kayabacho 1-chome.

The year after the arrival of the Kurofune in 1853, "Enseikikijutsu" was published. Tonishi means "Western" and is a book that becomes a gold-shaped tower that shines brilliantly in the history of science in Japan. Satsuma domain will build Japan's first warship, the Shoheimaru, which was manufactured based on the description of Western-style craft in Ensai Kiki. This book became a bestseller.

Komin made various things by himself, but one of the famous things is beer.

It seems that the Japanese knew the existence of beer through the Netherlands, and Genpaku Sugita and Seian Takebe were in "The Netherlands Medical Questions and Answers".

"Beer sake Tabemi said, it's a bad thing, Gozasoro without any trouble. My name is Bile." The beer that came from the Netherlands after a long journey has been lost in flavor and it is not cold, so it is imagined that there was no exhilaration at present.

It is said that in 1853, Komin boarded the Sasuke Hana on which Admiral Perry boarded as an interpreter, and met beer at the banquet after the meeting. Komin, who read the Dutch version of "School of Science" written by German agricultural scholar Steckhart (although he was familiar with Dutch, but he seemed unable to speak alone), was impressed by the explanation on the brewing method and decided to try brewing. Komin seemed to like the whole content of this book, including the beer brewing method, so he translated it into a book. This became his masterpiece "Chemical New Book". By the way, the beer brewing method is stored in volume 13.

Depending on the yeast used, there are two types of beer brewing methods: "top fermentation" and "bottom fermentation". At that time, Komin was divided into the translations of "Jobujo-ho" and "Shibujo-ho", and understood the differences. The lower bubble brewing method is a low-temperature brewing method compared to the upper bubble brewing method, and while it takes time to prepare, it is suitable for making beer (so-called lager beer) that can withstand long-term storage. It is natural that Komin, who was an unrivaled sake enthusiast, decided to try brewing when he knew how to make beer in detail.

Komin built a furnace in his home garden and tried a beer. It is written that a tasting party was held at Sogenji Temple (known as Kappa-ji Temple) in Matsubacho, Asakusa (present-day Matsugaya, Taito-ku), but the record was burned down due to the intense air raid of the Pacific War and the materials are not present. Even so, Komin Kawamoto's name has been handed down as "the founder of beer". The home where this brewery was held was Minami Kayabacho, near the current Kayabacho 1-chome intersection.

About 10 years ago, Konishi Shuzo (famous for sake white snow), which is located in the same town as Komin Kawamoto and still has the Shiroyuki Edo store at Kayabacho 1-chome, is said to have reproduced Komin beer and tasted it by some people. It is. You may not be able to drink "Komin Beer" from late Tokugawa shogunate, but I would like you to take the lead at the Chuo-ku Tourism Association to launch the "Reprint Komin Beer" project and provide me with a tasting opportunity.

[Thank you to Kyobashi Library Regional Library]

Even when writing this blog, I was very helpful to the people of the regional library (B2F underground) of the Kyobashi Library. In addition to simply using materials, we hope that the investigation of staff members will continue in the new library.

Thank you very much for taking care of you. Thank you very much.
