[The 45th Excursion Series] Residents of Muramatsucho (currently Higashinihombashi)
Follow the footsteps of Shinobu Hishikawa
Hello. I'm Hanes, an active correspondent.
Hiroshige Utagawa is famous for ukiyo-e artists who are related to Chuo-ku, but Shinobu Hishikawa, who is widely known for his masterpiece "Return Beauty" and is called the "ancestor of Ukiyo-e", is in Muramatsucho (currently Higashinihombashi) Did you know that you spent your later years?
In the first place, Shinobu was born in the Edo period as the eldest son of Kichizaemon Hishikawa, who works on sewing foil embroidery at Tamura Awa National Health Insurance (currently Hoda, Kyonan Town, Chiba Prefecture).
In Kyonan Town, there is a monument to the birthplace of Hishikawa Shinobu, where you can remember his achievements.
However, Shinobu did not choose the path of painting from the beginning.
Start by training the sewing foil of the family business under the family pattern and father!
I liked drawing from an early age, so I later went to Edo and became a print artist.
In addition to spreading expensive paintings into woodcuts, it was widely spread to the common people, and establishing a new painting style "Ukiyo-e" based on the customs of the common people, leading to success.
He dominated the world with ukiyo-e beauty paintings, and died in Edo in 1694 (Genroku 7).
However, there are no graves in Edo (currently Tokyo).
According to the information board set up near the above-mentioned monument, it is said that the remains were buried in his hometown of Hota by will.
Beganin is a designated historic site designated by Kyonan Town, and on the back side facing the sea, you can see a sign stating "The founder of burial ground Ukiyo-e by Hishikawa Shinobu."
We will refrain from posting photos of the grave, but I visited the grave.
It is said that the tombstone at the time of the burial was washed away by the tsunami of 1703 (Genroku 16), and the current tomb was rebuilt in later generations.
Because the weather was fine, I went a little further and visited the `` Hishikawa Shinobu Memorial Hall '', and on the outer wall of the memorial hall, `` Boso famous place Awa Hota Beach '' drawn by Hiroshige Utagawa, an ukiyo-e artist related to Chuo-ku, I noticed that it was being treated.
According to the website of Kyonan Town Hall / Hishikawa Shinobu Memorial Hall, Hiroshige went by boat from Edo to Kisarazu.
It must have been boarded from the Kisarazu riverbank that once existed along the Nihonbashi River.
(For the Kisarazu riverbank, "[42nd Excursion Series] Hiroshige Utagawa and Katsushika Hokusai also use! Please refer to "What is the riverbank that used to be located west of Edobashi?" )
Shinobu was a little mysterious because he did not know the year of birth and his career was unknown, but according to the website of the Kyonanmachi government office / Hishikawa Shinobu Memorial Hall, `` The address of Shinobu in Edo was , Sakaimachi Yokocho (Ningyocho), Tachibana-cho, Muramatsu-cho 2-chome, etc. are confirmed from the materials. "
Among them, the address of Muramatsucho is widely recognized, which is the current Higashi Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku.
Higashinihombashi has completely changed the state of the city compared to the Edo period, but it is somewhat impressive to think that the ukiyo-e artist who painted that "return beauty" also lived in the current Chuo-ku.
I wanted to find out a little more about how he lived in Edo.
Sweeping
As you may have already noticed, there was a self-paced cat between the monument of "Hishikawa Shinobu Birthplace" and its platform.
Ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa is famous for his beloved cat family, but what was Hishikawa Shinobu?
At first I didn't even notice the existence of a cat because it didn't move much, but he seemed to be used to it and let me take pictures from various angles.
