To learn about the history of Shiseido 150 years, visit the Corporate Museum!
(Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture)
In 1872, Shiseido was born in Ginza, Tokyo as Japan's first private Western-style dispensing pharmacy when herbal medicine was the mainstream. Arinobu Fukuhara, the founder of the Naval Hospital, was the pharmacy director of the Naval Hospital, but he was worried about the poor distribution of drugs to the public, and also opened Shiseido with the aim of establishing a medical division of labor system not found in Japan. Arinobu was twenty-four years old.
Yes, 2022 will be the 150th anniversary of Shiseido's opening in Ginza.
The Shiseido Corporate Museum, which centrally collects and preserves a variety of materials, including products and advertising products created over the long history of Shiseido, and displays and displays some of the collections, was opened in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture in 1992, celebrating its 120th anniversary.
From 1872 (Meiji 5), when Shiseido was founded as Japan's first private Western-style dispensing pharmacy, to this day, corporate history, product packages, posters, newspaper and magazine advertisements, and beauty consultant costumes, as well as information on the relationship between Shiseido and Japanese makeup culture.
In addition, the image of Ginza at the time of the establishment of Shiseido is reproduced with a diorama, which is also interesting.
We would like to introduce some of the materials on display in the museum, as Shiseido provided materials.
Fukuhara Sanitary Toothpaste Soap
Japan's first solid soap-shaped toothpaste was released in 1888 (Meiji 21). In the era when powdered toothpaste was 2 to 3 yen per bag, it was very expensive at 25 yen, but the quality was good and the sales were good, and the 3rd National Industrial Expo in 1890 (Meiji 23) Received a reward at At the top of the container, the mark of "Hawk", a trademark of Shiseido at the time, is drawn.
Oidelmin
In 1897, Shiseido launched several other products in addition to Oidelmin, and entered the cosmetics industry. The prescription of Nakami was based on the research of Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, a professor at Tokyo Imperial University at the time of studying abroad at the University of Berlin, and Shiseido aimed to develop scientific and high-quality products in cosmetics, just like pharmaceuticals.
Most of the skin toners at that time were Japanese-style names, while Oydelmin was coined from Greek "eu" (good) and "derma" (skin), and the glass bottle in the container was beautiful, and the liquid inside had a bright color reminiscent of red wine, so it was nicknamed "Shiseido Red Water".
Oidelmin is a super long-selling product that has been loved by many people even now, more than 100 years after its launch. In 1997, the 100th anniversary of its launch, the "Oydelming Robal", which was designed by French creator Serge Luctans, was released simultaneously in Japan and overseas as a symbol of Shiseido's aesthetic sense. The medium formulation has also evolved further, making it a highly functional makeup solution that "holds skin moisture from drying and adjusts the skin's natural rhythm."
Perfume "Hanatsubaki"
Full-fledged perfume "Hanatsubaki" produced by Japanese
Perfume in Japan in the 1910s was mainly imported from Paris, and some poor imitations were seen, but Arinobu Fukuhara's son and the first president, Shinzo Fukuhara, created perfume similar to the scent of Japanese flowers such as camellia, plum, and wisteria. The perfume "Hanatsubaki", which was released in 1917, is a full-fledged perfume that can be said to be a pioneer made by Japanese people. The following year, in 1918, perfume "ume" and "wisteria" were released. Using a high-quality glass bottle reminiscent of a cut glass, it was luxurious to burn the product name and flower design with gold leaf. In the same year, advertisements published in women's magazines included 21 kinds of perfume names as special perfume of Shiseido.
Shinzo Fukuhara tried to create the senses and images of flowers as fragrances, rather than simply recreating the scent of flowers. In the perfume "Tsukimiso", we made a novel attempt to express the scene of the yellow flowers of the moonflower in the scent as the sun sinks over the dunes.
