Architecture in Chuo-ku (11) Onoya Sohonten
The Onoya Sohonten (2-2-1 Shintomi), located at the corner of the Shintomibashi intersection, was built in 1924 after the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The completed wooden building is registered in the Tangible Cultural Property of the country.
It is a two-story wooden Machiya building (store and house) that will soon be completed 100 years ago.
Onoya Sohonten was founded during the Yasunaga period (1772 to 1781), and since Kaei 2 (1849).
It is a long-established store of "manufacturing and selling tabi" that has been doing business for more than 170 years with a store in the current location.
The eaves are high, and the second floor is a typical "girder structure".
The exterior in front of the store is structured with high eave height on both the first and second floors.
It's a coincidence.
On the roof, tiles from Mikawa are heavily piled up.
Wooden large signboard of "Onoya" installed on the roof.
On the outer wall of the first floor, the signboard of "Dance Tabishosho" stands out.
The second floor is a typical "girder structure", and the "girder" passed horizontally on the tip of the "armwood" protruding to the eaves is passed horizontally.
There is a "rafter" that supports a heavy roof on top of it.
The thick wood and copper rain gutters between the first and second floors are also impressive.
West exterior: Gabled and clapboarding
The exterior is on the west side of the building.
The gabled roof and the clapboard outer wall are left, and along with the "Girder structure" on the second floor, a solid and quaint figure.
It is a valuable Machiya architecture where you can see it.
Materials of "Machikado Exhibition Hall" in the store
Show window where products change with time.
There is a material display of "Chuo-ku Machikado Exhibition Hall" in the store.
"New Tomigata Tabi" created by Fukutaro, the fifth-generation owner (finished so that the legs look thin and small and beautiful.)
Tabi) and tools for manufacturing tabi are on display.
The tabi at Onoya Sohonten is still used by many actors, including Kabuki actors, dancers, and Noh actors.
