East drama is a landmark of Tsukiji
As you head from Ginza to Tsukiji, you can see the [Tokigaku Building] on your right after crossing the Mannen Bridge, which now straddles the expressway. The head office of Shochiku is located here. The current building was built in 1975 (Showa 50), so it will be almost half a century.
It was in 1930 (Showa 5) that the early [Tokyo Theater] (abbreviation "East Theater") was originally built in this place. It seems that the ruined building has been a specialty of Tsukiji since then. Initially, it opened as a theater, and the Kabukiza was damaged by the war, so for a while he was taking on the performance of Kabuki. Many famous actors stood on the stage here.
Since then, it has been converted to a movie theater and has been popular for a long time. Recently, "Cinema Kabuki" and "Cinema Opera" are often screened, and enthusiastic fans are gathering.
However, this building has reached its 50th anniversary, and last year, Shochiku announced that it will be rebuilt in the late 2020s. In the Tsukiji area, there are many redevelopment plans for the block, including the site of the former wholesale market. The coastal subway concept has also become a reality. The state of the town will change a lot from now on. I want to remember the scenery of the moving city.
