About Shinkawa, a town of sake wholesalers
~ Ask the President Kashimaya~
It is "New River" of new correspondent who passed the 15th Chuo-ku sightseeing certification (conducted on February 18, 2023) and registered as correspondent. The first memorable blog is about "Shinkawa" where I work.
Prologue
Shinkawa was Zuiken Kawamura in 1660 (Manji 3) (1618-1699, an Australian merchant in the early Edo period). Those who have contributed to shipping and flood control. It is said that Higashimiya-mura, Ise-Kunikai-gun) was excavated, and the purpose is to improve the convenience of unloading goods transported from various countries to Edo by boat. As a result of this excavation, Nada and Itami liquor, which are called descending liquors, were transported one after another by barrel boats, and this area became a landing place for sake, and many sake wholesalers gathered.
However, the Shinkawa area was severely damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Pacific War, and after the war, in 1948 (Showa 23), Shinkawa was reclaimed by the treatment of war damage such as the removal of rubble.
In the Shinkawa area, which has such a history, there are still many sake wholesalers Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine, the guardian angel of sake wholesalers, and sake wholesalers that follow the flow of downhill sake.
So, I asked Mr. Koji Hirooka, President of Kashimaya (a sake wholesaler founded in 1869), who came to meet at Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine, where I drop in on my way to work, to talk about Shinkawa in various ways.

<About the old Shinkawa River>
In my father's era, there was a Toden running on Eitai-dori St., and when I got off the Shinkawa stop, I heard the smell of alcohol. In the past, sake was put in wooden barrels, so it would have smelled of sake here and there. I think that there was a sake wholesaler and a lot of sake barrels.
When I was a child, I went up to sake barrels and water bottles in a vacant lot next to Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine. Also, if you stand on the Reigishi Bridge, you could see the fireworks festival of the Sumida River.
In the past, alcohol was transported by boat, but Shinkawa was reclaimed and transportation was replaced by truck, so it may be difficult to imagine the old Shinkawa state . In addition, Shinkawa is said to have weak ground because rubble was buried during the war disaster treatment, and I heard that it was difficult to hit the foundation of the building. In the past, this area was also called Konjac Island.

<About Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine>
In 1625 (Kanei 2), Shusei Keikoin Shonin gave a mansion in Edo Daikancho from Tokugawa 2nd Shogun Hidetada, and set up a place of worship at Ise-jingu Shrine in the mansion. It was the beginning, and then the relocation of Meiku in 1657 (Meiya 3). Since then, it has been worshiped as the god of origin and the guardian deity of sake wholesalers, but in 1945 (Showa 20), the shrine hall was destroyed and rebuilt in Reitaisai festival on October 17, 1952 (Showa 27).
At the end of the annual festival, there is a direct meeting at the health insurance hall next to it, and the annual Shinkawa closing is also held. At the Kenbo Kaikan, a gathering of sake wholesalers, including major trading companies, is also held, and 18 brands of sake barrels handled by companies participating in the union are dedicated to the precincts. The Miyaji of Masaru Shinkawa Jingu Shrine also serves as Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine.

<Business>
In the Edo period, I separated from the Hirooka family (a model of NHK's serial TV novel "Asagaraita" (2015)), who ran a money exchange business as a Kashimaya in Osaka, and came to Shinkawa with the relocation of Tokyo. Founded in 1869 as Hirooka Suke Goro Shoten, I am the sixth generation.
In the past, we were able to do business only with Nada sake, but now we have a lot of liquor such as locally brewed sake and beer and shochu. In addition to sake, we also sell beer, shochu, whiskey, etc.

[Note]
Sohana was a very elegant liquor. The first attack was a bit weaker, but when included in the mouth, you can feel the plump aroma and thickness derived from koji in the United States and the United States, and it is a type of sweet (sake degree of -4), but as a lingering lingering, acidity and spiciness remain, and I thought it was a sake with a start and change. Please try it by all means.
