On May 25, 2019 (Saturday), the Tokiwa School Alumni Association General Assembly was also held to showcase the new annex school building. At that time, we heard from Chairman Takashi Hashimoto of Tokiwa School Alumni Association. "Nihonbashi History Archives Tokiwa (tentative name)" is set up on the first floor, waiting for the opening on September 1. Digital exhibition facilities are provided, and the history of the development of Nihonbashi, which led the economy, commerce and culture as the center of Edo, is reproduced, providing an opportunity for children to learn about the history of the local area and take pride in the local area. Is expected. Artist Keijiro Niino is in charge of the production. It will be open to elementary school students in the city, so the number of famous places in Nihonbashi will increase by one again.
The annex of Tokiwa Elementary School was built in five stories according to the exterior of the school building.
Tokiwa School was opened in 1873 (Meiji 6) as the fourth school in the first university ward, first junior high school district, in the current new building of the Bank of Japan. The current school building is a reconstruction school building built in 1929 (Showa 4) in Nihonbashi Honishi-cho, after the Kanto Earthquake. It has a graceful appearance that takes into account the window and geometric decorativeness. It seems that the remains of air raid shelters are still being used today. Nihonbashi has many buildings that make you feel the history of 90 years, and it is surprising that school architecture is included in it.
Of the 16 elementary schools in Chuo Ward, Tokiwa and Yasuaki are valuable school buildings that have been designated as Historic buildings selected by Tokyo Metropolitan Government. In addition, Tokiwa was designated as a modern industrial heritage designated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2008.
History and Philosophy of Tokiwa School Alumni Association
The alumni association is held every year on the first Saturday of March, the anniversary of the opening of the school. Only this year, it was held specially on Saturday, May because it was a general meeting that also served as the announcement of the completed annex. The number of attendees this time was 170, and it was a very peaceful chat scene.
Tokiwa Elementary School has a history of opening the school by donating land and buildings by local people. I strongly felt the love of Tokiwa of the alumni association. I heard that the alumni association continued to support the construction of this annex.
The number of children gradually decreased due to the decrease in the number of residents due to the fact that the school was in the center of the commercial area, and there was a danger of consolidation at one time, but after overcoming it, it is now a specially appointed school from all areas of Chuo-ku It seems that the number of applications has increased and it has become a lottery. Everyone was pleased that the number of children, which was one class, has changed from the second grade to two classes.
English education in Tokiwa as a Chuo-ku International Pilot School and a special school for the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
