In the Edo period, Nihonbashi, the starting point of the five highways, people went on a journey at dawn. In this tour, we will show you around Nihonbashi where you can encounter the remnants of Edo.

Nihonbashi was the first bridge built in 1603 at the beginning of the Edo period. The current bridge is a stone arch bridge built in 1911 and is the 20th generation. On the bridge is a lion holding the emblem of Tokyo and a Kirin who is heading to the world with large fins.

In addition, there are four plazas around the bridge: a plaza of the original mark, a plaza of flowers, a plaza of Otohime, and a plaza of waterfall, each of which has a story with the bridge.

The Meijiya Kyobashi Building is the head office of Meijiya built in 1933 and is designated by the ward of Tangible Cultural Property. It is organized in an excellent design of the Italian Renaissance style, and delicate and splendid decorations can be seen everywhere. In addition, it is the oldest existing building integrated with the subway station, realizing the first private building that connects the basement floor of the building with the subway station. It is also a valuable cultural property that tells the history of Showa, overcoming the Great Tokyo Air Raid and environmental changes.

If you go a little further, you will see the Artizon Museum. Opened in 2020. The predecessor is the Bridgestone Museum of Art, which has been popular for a long time. Introduced cutting-edge IT technology, it has been reborn as a futuristic museum where you can experience the "creativity" of your work by seeing, feeling, and knowing it, not just as a place for viewing. Until August 20th, an exhibition titled "Awareness and Development of Abstract Paintings from Cezanne, Forvism, and Cubism to the present" is being held.

After crossing Yaesu Street, you will find the Takashimaya Nihonbashi store, which was designated as the first important cultural property as a department store building. Tenpo 2 (1831) started Takashimaya, which handles used clothes and cotton in Kyoto, and this building was built in 1933, and was equipped with air conditioning and heating, which was rare at that time. .

The first department store in Japan, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. In the Edo period, at Mitsui Echigo-ya, a kimono dealer, it took the Mitsui family three and Echigo-ya, named it Mitsukoshi, and was the first in the world to introduce the sale of bills. This year marks the 350th anniversary of our founding. It was designated as a national important cultural property in 2016.

A tower with observation deck was set up on the roof in 1921. Later, it was called the "gold Tower" and became a tower that symbolizes Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi.

The Mitsui Main Building was completed in 1929 as the building completed in Meiji was damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and was completed in 1929 as an office building for major Mitsui companies. It is said that this building, 7 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground, and steel reinforced steel bars can withstand earthquakes twice as large as the Great Kanto Earthquake. The column attached to the outer wall is a masterpiece, embodying the design policy of "splendid, dignity, and simplicity". It has high value as a representative building of the early Showa era, and was designated as a national important cultural property in 1998.

On the left side is the main building of the Bank of Japan and the new building in the back. For a long time in the Edo period, there was a gold coin foundry called Koza. Currently, the building is divided into the former Tachi, the new building, and the annex, and the former Tachi is the main building, and it is designed by Kingo Tatsuno and Japan's leading architect who is famous for the red brick station building at Tokyo Station. Modeled on the Belgian central bank, this building is a masterpiece alongside the Akasaka Guest House in West-style building, and was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1974.

Fukutoku Shrine

In ancient shrine, which is said to have already been enshrined during the Jogan period in Emperor Seiwa, it was enshrined as Inari Shrine in Fukutoku Village, a village in Musashino, and named it after its name. When the second shogun Hidetada was visited, he saw the spring buds sprouting at the torii gate of Nuku (sawtooth oak), and named the shrine as "Mebuki Inari". It is also a shrine that was allowed to perform lottery tickets during the Edo period, and many people come to pray for winning lottery tickets, and also pray for winning tickets.

Kyodai Shoran

It is a reproduction of emakimono located along the underground passage of Mitsukoshi Department Store, with a bird's-eye view of Nihonbashi Street (now Chuo-dori) from Nihonbashi to Kanda Imagawa Bridge. Hirodai Shoran is the scenery of Oedo, where the daisies won, and is the world of the 11th Shogun Ienari Tokugawa in 1805. There are 1671 men and women of all ages, 20 dogs, 13 horses, 4 cows, 1 monkeys, and 2 hawks. Take a look at the lively town where you can hear the conversations of fish banks, greengrocers, sake wholesalers, dry goods shops, etc., samurai, townspeople, and craftsmen, which are said to fall a thousand cars a day.
