How was Ginza made?

There is a monument of "Ginza Birthplace" along Ginza Chuo-dori in Ginza 2-chome. In this monument, "In 1612 (1612 AD), a silver coin casting Ginza government office will be set up in the land of Tokugawa shogunate. At that time, the town name was called Shin-Ryogaecho, but it was commonly called Ginza-cho, and it was announced in 1869 that Ginza would be the street name. " As you can see from this, the name of Ginza was officially adopted in 1869 (Meiji 2), and the name of the town in the Edo period was changed from Ginza 1-chome to 4-chome. The town name has been changed to. Furthermore, in 1872, Sanjumabori 1-chome to 3-chome were integrated into Ginza.

However, at that time, Ginza was only near both sides of the current Ginza Chuo-dori, which runs from Kyobashi to Ginza 4-chome as shown in the figure above.

In the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred on September 1, 1923 (Daisho 12), Ginza became a burnt field in Hara. Along with the land readjustment of the reconstruction project after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Reconstruction Bureau will organize the street name, and Ginza was supposed to be from 1-chome to 4-chome as before, but local people early on the "large Ginza construction" The spirit of "was born. The residents wanted to change Ginza Street from 1-chome to 8-chome, and change the name of the street from Ginza Nishi 1-chome to 8-chome on the west side along the moat. As a result of repeated petition and petition for seven years, on March 5, 1930, Ginza 1-chome to 8-chome and Ginza Nishi 1-chome to 8-chome were born.

On August 1, 1951 (Showa 26), Kibikicho 1-8-chome was changed to Ginza Higashi 1-8-chome. Kibiki-cho was synonymous with Kabukiza and was a venerable place name since the opening of Edo, but the majority of the townspeople strongly hoped and the ward council also voted in response.

In this way, the name of Ginza changed every time major events such as the Meiji Restoration, the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the Pacific War occurred, and it developed greatly. On the other hand, the historical name from the Edo period has disappeared. However, in order to further increase the prosperity of Ginza, most of the townspeople were strongly hopeful under the concept of "Gai Ginza Street".
